A new mutant strain of the virus has now reached Bristol. We are being told not to leave home unless absolutely essential and to eat tinned food. The Minister for Health has obviously not met many guinea pigs. Who's going to break the news, no more cucumber or peppers? This couldn't have come at a worse time of year, Sundays snow whilst it didn't hang around long has killed off most of the weeds in the garden and what's left of the grass is turning brown. Hope all the supermarket delivery slots don't disappear like last time! Last summer I had so much veg in the garden I shared it with the neighbours, sorry boys it could be a hay and pellet diet for a while.

Its terrible isnt it. But as long as we all stay safe its the main thing. The piggies will be fine on a pellet and hay based diet, staying safe is the most likely thing.

They are going to do door to door testing using local authority people. So we've been isolating for nearly a year, not had contact with anyone and some stranger's who've been to I don't know how many houses is going to come to the door and get close enough to swab your throat!

Is it not the home tests they hand out to do on yourself.

I don't know. It just says they will be testing door to door. Mind you that is what Mat Hancock said, the Council have just said they haven't planned anything yet. Same old left hand not knowing what the right hands doing, and government ministers making announcements before getting their brains into gear I suspect. It's not just Bristol there's a few places on the list. It wouldn't have spread like this if they'd made the lockdown a real lockdown in the first place.

Aww I'm so sorry that sounds awful! Is this the new strain the one that was in London or a different one? I've lost count. I'm sure your guinea pigs will be okay but it it is a massive pain when you're running low on veggies! Lots of hay and limited veg! They'll be okay! But it is a terrible time during winter..

my family and friends live in maidstone, kent and are affected by the South African variant, and the same is being asked of them.I'm sorry Piggieminder,so difficult for you.xx

If it helps, I get grass from these guys and usually it's next day delivery. Might be able to be a weekly treat or something in case of emergency. While fresh fruit and veg stocks may dwindle, I dont think people will panic buy wheatgrass for juicing 😅 they also do little sprouts, peashoots etc

I hope you're able to stay safe 💓

That website looks amazing. I'll need to save that. Thanks for the share!

I've got a delivery for Saturday hopefully the fresh stuff will be in stock. I have been sussing out a few edible weeds on my exercise walks just in case. I won't be giving my walks up with out a fight, once a week veggie shop yes walk no! If I don't walk at least every other day my back locks up and I can't move for days on end. Piggies might go on smaller rations but they won't go completely without. I've also got some dried forrage.

Oh my goodness. I’m so sorry to learn about your dilemma. It must be so upsetting knowing you can’t go and get veg for your piggies. People will still need to buy tinned food so it doesn’t make sense. 😞

Wow. Didn't see that coming (sarcastic face). I wish they would've done a proper lock down. This half lockdown isn't doing much. Why can't we have the proper one like last March? I mean, more people are infected and more people are dying. Really don't understand why hasn't everything been shut down like last year. This way it's just dragging on and no improvement in sight!

I think it is expected that people have already prepared for and have well stocked stores and freezers. I must admit I'm not worried about the humans, we have may some odd concoctions for a while. Hopefully I will be able to get deliveries this time round and there won't be much of a problem. Another month and the grass will be growing again.

I can see this being the whole Country by the end of the month @Hath .

I used to get organic veg delivered few years back. They did subscription as well. It's more expensive, but if you're really struggling then it might be an option?

So far I've seen it's Liverpool, Walsal, Woking, Broxborne, Maidstone, Southport and parts of London.

Where are you looking? Just checked latest updates on covid and it's obviously just pushing the great vaccine that'll save us all...

It's Matt Hancock's speech this afternoon as reported in the Bristol Post online. It's not letting me put a link.

So sorry that you’re in the area drastically effected :( I do agree with @Hath on wishing we’d have a lockdown like we had in March. It needs to be done else it’ll just be the lockdown hokey pokey indefinitely. Stay safe x

Sorry you're in one of the areas where they've found the new strain. I'm sure your piggies will be fine with hay and pellets for a bit if you can't get any veg for them.

Overall it isn't good, but I suppose at least they are doing lots of testing to try to keep up with what the virus is doing. Otherwise we would be repeatedly hit with more virulent outbreaks and not have a clue what to do about them or whether the vaccines will work against them.

What I don't understand is why are people being allowed to travel abroad still? At the weekend I heard that a bunch of brits had been forcibly quarantined in the Alps - what the hell were they doing there in the first place?! Travel should be only for emergency or essential purposes, not fun. Should be easy enough to enforce as we don't have any land borders ...

I always wash off my peppers, bananas, cucumbers, etc. with hot soapy (washing up liquid) water, rinse & leave to dry.

If you can get them with your usual shop/delivery it's not much different than wiping over tins is it?
Our gannet, guzzling guineas could still be provided with their veggies safely then? Xx

I've always washed all my fruit and veg even in pre COVID days, I got food poisoning twice from prewashed salad, you would have thought I would have learnt the first time, it was about 10 years apart though! The problem was going to be getting deliveries, the only place I can get to deliver here is Iceland and their fresh stuff is very limited (iceberg lettuce!) and not very fresh it won't last a week. As it is nothing has changed, I can still go shopping and get fresh veg as I have done all along. It was just Mat Hancock making his usual announcement he'd not consulted anyone else on.
