Yep, that's right. My dad has decided that we're getting rid of the pigs :'( I'm really disagreeing with him, though. Those pigs will not leave my room (permanently) without a fight.

Why? Because I accidentally mentioned to him that I'm allergic to the pigs. We haven't gone to a doctor about it or anything, but whenever I'm around Pepsi or Buddy I get all stuffed up and sneezy, and I my skin gets red with itchy little bumps wherever they touch me. Makes holding them slightly miserable afterwards, but i still love.

My dad noticed that I had red bumps all along my chin, and I accidentally told him it was bc i was allergic. Pooh. Now he's like "we're getting rid of the pigs" and he's even trying to find a new home :o

My mom's fine with me keeping them, though. She says that if I'm willing to deal with the results, I should be able to have my piggies. And I agree.

Can't they live in a shed or somewhere else in the house so not directly in your room? And if you only get allergic when holding them I don't see what the fuss is about? I'm sorry to be sexist here, but....men ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

My husband is allergic too - however, he only gets the red spots and itchyness from the actual pigs, the blocked nose was because he couldnt deal with the hay and woodshavings (he has hayfever and allsorts).

Solution: Wear gloves at all times when handling piggies, and a Michael Jackson style mask to cover up your nose and mouth when changing bedding.

Otherwise my OH hasnt got any problems with the pigs just being in the room (they live in our kitchen), so if you are careful when handling them, you souldnt have a problem anymore. :)

Good luck!

I'm not allergic to pigs but I have an allergy to pet dapper (urine that releases into the air) so all my pigs live in the shed. I am ok handling them. Perhaps yours can live in a shed and maybe have a C&C cage so they can have more room. Obviously you still have to handle them though. What if you use latex gloves?

I'm allergic to some of mine too, when it's bad I take antihistamine / hayfever tablets e.g on big clean / grooming sessions!
Or try homeopathic stuff - that can really help

If my hubby said I'd have to get rid of my babies I'd tell him he'd have to go 1st. I have an 8 year old boy who has asthma & so far he hasn't had any reaction & he's always picking them up.....by the way has anyone seen the article in today's daily mail that says there has been a law passed in Switzerland banning children from cuddling their guinea pigs as they are too fragile....!!

We don't have a shed of any sorts that they could live in :[

The whole allergy part doesn't even bother me that much! I mean I get a little miserable afterwards, but I just take allergy medicine to clear up my nose and rub anti-itch cream on my bumps.

Someone told me to try them on a different bedding to see if I'm allergic to that, and try bathing them with some special shampoo to help control their dander?

What are they housed on at the moment? I wouild try something like megazorb or care fresh you need something that absorbs the dander I have mine of fleece in the house it wasn't absorbing but in the shed it is ok. :)

I have them on carefresh right now, and i'm still having allergic reactions. :[

I would try Megazorb as it is cheaper and you can change them more often. Changing them often may help. I know it's a right pain I've struggled for months with sinus issues and blamed readigrass (which contributed) I got all but one of my pigs in the shed and I will still having problems I put him out and I'm fine! Although there was no smell from the pigs as I always keep ontop of the cleaning the particles are in the air and if you breath them in which you obviously will then you are going to suffer for it.

I have a rabbit as well but Tika doesn't trouble me at all which I find odd! :)

Megazorb is cheap £5.00 a bag. :)

I'm pretty sure I can't get Megazorb in michigan, lol. I haven't seen it at any pet store i've ever been to :[

You can get it from horse feed shops or a farm shop. Google Northern Crop Driers stockists come up then. :)
