Ive been buying timothy hay from pets at home for a while, but just wondering if it was alright

P@H is variable in quality, I usually buy Burgess and Science Selective too and keep the P@H hay for sitting on. It can be good, but also not so good, and until you open the bag and feel it and sniff it you dont know which!

I've bought a few times from them and to be honest I wouldn't again. First pack I got was excellent, 2nd wasn't great and the 3rd got thrown in the compost. I've recently started using nature's own and my boy motors through the Timothy hay and asks for more, which is a first.

I'd just keep an eye on the quality per bag as a lot of hay suppliers can be variable.

I stopped buying it a while ago. It can be fine but it can be awful, more like straw, yellow and stiff and dry.

I still have to go to Pets at Home for their pellets so I get Burgess hay from them, not the kind with anything added but plain timothy hay, or sometimes the "long strand" one as a treat - they are both marked "for rabbits" but hay is hay, surely?

Like all piggy foods I dont think there is a "best" for everything! Science selective is very long sharp green strands that are great for the hayrack but not nice to sit on. The girls love it but Theo isnt too fussed with it and only nibbles the softer bits. Burgess excel is shorter softer green strands but great for treat bags and boxes or to put a handful in the playpen or haytray. P@H hay or cheap meadow hay is great for an all round nibbling/sleeping on/peeing on product to provide lots and lots of general hay in the hutch or nestbox or on the floor.

I love nature’s own hay especially the sweet green hay :)

Thanks for the advice, next P@H visit , I will buy burgess or natures own.
Another question- do you have to change the hay gradually like with pellets ? or can you just swap it straight away?

I went in to the store and it was yellow, so I brought it on Amazon, I found burgess at a good price I also give them readigrass and graze on grass

I buy Nature's Own Sweet Green Hay at £4.99 for 3.5kg. it is lovely hay really fresh and green and no dust. If you spend £19.95 postage is free. They sell other types of hay and forage too.

Didn't know if you had it there but Nature's Own is by far my favorite for them. Stays fresh the longest and seems easier for the girls (boys bathe in any kind of hay :-))

I wholly agree with @Louise's Zoo , I use Timothy hay.co.uk their hay is fabulous. They ran out at the beginning of the year, and I tried another supplier, but went back to them for my last batch, and it is scrumptious. I put a handful of it with the other hay (which was from hay and straw, so it was good stuff too). You can see how green it is by comparison.

Think I need to change my Hay too! It’s similar to yellow straw!

Sorry to jump on your post but just seen that hay can be swapped straight away! ....Is it ok to chop and change or should you change and stick to the same?

Hay is fine . Its the nuggets you need to introduce gradually. Maybe be careful with readigrass. But hay is fine to keep trying different ones straight away

has anyone seen or used the woodlands oat mix? the strands are long and green, is it oat hay? the texture is just weird compared to other hays. what hays are best from petsathome

Is that the 500g bag from pets at home for £3.99? If so I buy it as a treat as it workjs out expensive but my pigs love it.

I've been buying the Burgess Timothy Hay - They love it but three piggies are getting through it at quite a rate... its cheaper to feed a horse! So what do people do? I could have a big bale but I don't really want one kicking about!

It really depends on your storage facilities and budget. i have three hay eaters (two piggies and a rabbit) and get through a lot of hay. I use haybox.club on a subscription as it is delivered each month, fantastic quality hay, cheaper to buy in bulk (although they are closed to new bulk orders at present) and as it’s in cardboard boxes, stores without mess.
