Hi, having recently moved to fleece, each floor has a correx hay tray as piggies don't like hay nets /racks. They have a thin layer of shavings and fresh hay twice daily, emptied at night and refreshed. Tonight I found a few tiny brown insects in the corner of one hay tray ... Any ideas please? I have recently noticed the odd fly in the room, have they come from hatched eggs? Or from the hay? Thanks

I have just tipped a handful of fresh hay onto a clean unused piece of correx, and guess what... It has tiny crawlies in it. So I need to bin the rest of this bale and buy somewhere else. I stopped buying pre packed due to expense of 6 piggies, but never noticed this in the last bale from another farm. Is this very common? Have I just been unlucky? Need some advice please as have to go out for more hay today!

:DYes, you need to ditch the hay with the insects in. I don't know what they are. I don't think they are from flies. Fly eggs pupate in a hard shiny brown cocoon. Have you found any on your piggies? I would check them to see if the insects are getting on your pigs. Most of the forum members get their hay from on-line websites. These sites sell hay that has been cleaned so is free from dust and insects. The four most popular sites are

thehayexperts.co.uk
timothyhay.co.uk
dustfreehay.co.uk
hayforpets.co.uk

Have a look and find the one you like best. I myself use the latter 2 most often.

Thanks, I think I've bought hay from one of them before, it just worked out quitr expensive in comparison to local farms. Also have had the Lunnun hay which was good but again expensive in comparison and unfortunately they don't sell the large bags online only small

Have gone and bought some dust free Lunnun hay until I can be sure there are no mites left anywhere, then will think again. Not sure if I've just been unlucky or whether most hay has them?

Oh heck! Good spotting! :yikes:
I'd also be speaking to where you got the hay I'd be hoping they'd reimburse or at the very least refund.

Probs cost me more in petrol to get there tbh! Was on a day trip collecting 2 piggies from Sanctuary and bought a bale nearby!

I have found that ALL hay has some crawlies in it, even the dust free variety. I now stick to bales of hay from the farm.

Oh nooooo! This was the first time I've noticed them, it was my second farm bale, but from a different farm!
