I was wondering if it is good for my piggy to give him a bath..
Well, actually what I've been thinking is not exactly a bath.I'm thinking of just putting some warm water in a basin (not too much water, under the level of his head of course),and have him splish-splash inside it just to get a little bit wet.:))
It's not like he's dirty or something but I've never tried it and I think that some water now and then would be good for him as far as hygiene is concerned.
Has any of you ever tried it? And is it safe if I use a couple of shampoo drops?
Thanks a lot :)

Don't use human shampoo as it is too strong for piggies. You only need to bathe then once in a while and the water shouldn't really be higher than tops of their legs. You can get special guinea shampoo's & one of my books says that baby shampoo is OK too. Not 100% sure of this though so you may want to wait for another member to confirm this.

I do not think they need a bath unless they are dirty & most can go months between washings (they do clean themselves as well).

Hi,
Johnsons do their own small animal shampoo....Its also good to use natural shampoos as these dont have too many additives.

Have a look here. I swear by Lice N Easy! :)) I would only bath if needed, not just for the sake of it. I bathed Twinks and Milo last week dirty boys were rolling around in their poop! What possessed them I don't know! mallethead

Most piggies don't enjoy bath times so I wouldn't do it too often. Especially if you have to use the hair drier afterwards, it's even more stressful (for mine anyway).

Talking of dirty boys, I changed mine yesterday and while i was busy taking Fin to the run, Bertie decided to hide under the vet bed... Unfortunately, it was a day overdue to change so he came out damp and smelly... :)>>> My fault for being too tired on Fri night but why on earth would you want to hide under your onw pee?mallethead

My pigs really don't enjoy bath time, and let me tell you this, the only thing harder to catch than a guinea pig, is a wet guinea pig!

I've had mine a year and have only had to do it 3 or 4 times, I recommend Johnson's Small Animal Shampoo =]

I totally adree with 'sunshine&twinkle' - lice & easy by gorgeous guineas is great! So is 'posh & go' (for long haired beauties) & also 'just for boars' (just what it says on the label!) these shampoos are fab & you can buy trial sizes if you don't want to buy a big bottle.

All of the piggies I have ever owned have hated having a bath. Personally if [*]you[/*] don't want to get too wet - use the bath! An inch or so of water & get the pig in, shampooed & rinsed asap! You can use a sink, but be prepared for some escape action! And quite possibly a very wet top! It is amazing how far & high a pig can jump when he is wet & determined, as well as gripping onto you for dear life! :))

Don't forget to get them dried asap. I let them dry naturally, but I turn up the heating whilst they are drying. (& make up a clean cage to butter them up & make them like me again!@)) Alternatively you can use a hair dryer on a low setting & make them even more beautiful than they already are! ;)

Good luck & enjoy the fun! :))

My sow used to like splashing about in the water. She was a short-haired piggie and I bathed her twice a year - once after the summer and once at the end of winter. Ensure your piggie is dried with either a towel or hair dryer. If he's an outdoor piggie don't put him back outside until he's thoroughly dry.

Thank you all so much!
I followed your advice and today we had our first bath! I didn't use any shampoo since I couldn't find anything suitable, not even in petshops here where I live,so water is all we had..
Anyway, he didn't seem to enjoy it of course, but he didn't try to escape either..He was just standing still, looking at me half frightened-half wondering what this crazy woman was doing to him :S Afterwards I just wrapped him in a towel and let him dry naturally, since he hates the hair drier even when it comes to my hair :) He is an indoor piggy so we wouldn't have any frostbites anyway :)

i have never bath my piggies. i know lots of piggy owners will not be happy but my girls who have just passed over were over 6 years old. freddie never had one at all and she smelt clean and normal. and didnt need one but the last 6 months of jacques life she did. so i only bath if it is the last resort and needs it. gosh i miss them both.
