I have a guinea who has problems with utis (or/and possible crystals). I've avoided tomatoes because I read they can make it worse. But every time I gave her a little bit, she seemed to improve. I thought it was a coincidence, but it happened so many times. I now give her them all the time and she seems a lot better than she was (she is still on her medacam 3 times a day).
I wonder if it could help other guineas. I did read this about humans and tomatoes and it mentions uti's: http://healthimpactnews.com/2014/20...should-make-them-a-daily-staple-in-your-diet/

They're also anti-inflammatory. So, utis, crystals etc could cause inflammation and they could help this.

Thank you for that, Amba I didn't know that about tomatoes. That's good. I give mine a quarter of a baby or cherry tomato every now and then.

It's not something I've heard of, but tomatoes are acidic, so it may be that making the urine less alkaline there would be less chalky calcium deposits, which can lead to UTIs, so it does make some sense. None of my pigs like tomato, so it's just as well I haven't had any UTI problems so far.:tu:

Havent heard of tomatoes being an issue.

You may find that shes a little better do to them having a high water content and therefore she'll pee more out and flush her bladder out.

Interesting! My pigs hate tomatoes, though. I have chronic bladder/kidney issues myself and don't really notice a difference in terms of anything I eat or drink, but it does help if I always stay super-hydrated and go to the bathroom frequently. Going more often gives bacteria less time to grow before getting flushed out.

The vet recommended giving her extra water, and I force feed it to her for weeks, it actually made her worse, strangely. She will now be getting at least one tomato to share with her friend a day. :)
