Asked mum for some money to take him to the vets and she gave me about £40. I took him in today and they ended up taking all kinds of skin samples to look for the problem @) whether it be mites, lice, ringworm etc

I paid the consolation fee and they said they would ring me today with news of what they found but so far they haven't rung me. I am more worried about what all of that might cost though.....

Should have just gotten some Gorgeous Guineas instead as I am sure it is fungal

Unfortunately some vets insist on taking skin swabs to find out the problem. Did they not quote you a price?

When my girl had fungal, the vet just switched the light off, shone an ultra violate light on to the effected area and came up with the diagnosis only charging me the consultation fee.

At least you will know what it is you are dealing with and I hope they phone you back soon!

Some vets will let you pay in instalments so I wouldn't worry too much.
One vet we went to for an emergency charged us £50 just for a 5 minute consultation not including treatment, our regular vet charges just £17.50. I stupidly asked if they had made a mistake being so cheap :{
Good luck and it is always better to get them checked over properly rather than risk using something homeopathic which may cost hundreds of pounds if the piggy has a reaction. GG stuff is excellent but I still do a patch test 24 hours before using anything on my piggies :))

No she didn't qoute me a price at the time, Just hope it isn't too much really mallethead They said I only needed to pay the consolation of £8 so that should help lower the next payment

They close at 6 so if they don't get hold of me by then I will give them a ring tomorrow to see what they found.

What do you think they would prescribe? A cream or something?

Anything from gorgeous guineas is likely to be unsuitable for fungal or mites.

You've done the right thing by taking him to the vet, and it sounds like they know what they're doing. By doing skin scrapes and hair plucks, they can identify the cause, and give him the right treatment straight away, rather than try X, it doesn't work, so try Y etc. by which time it's just getting worse.

and an £8 consultation fee? :o

Wish my consult fees were £8!

The thing with the *.v lamp is only some species glow. So having a negative woods lamp test doesnt mean there is no ringworm. The only way to find out is to take samples and use microscopy or grow the samples.

lol bless

I was charged £15 to have Boxy put to sleep and cremated.

I went out to pay, she said that'd be £15...I was like oh, I asked for cremation too.... she was like...yeah, it's all on there :o

I, on the other hand, work for a large company in a reasonably affluent area of Bristol...go figure rolleyes

Yeah they took some hair, some skin samples and a culture. Poor McMac didn't enjoy having the sore bits scraped at :( He kept wanting to hide with Sprout in the carrier. They haven't rung today so will give them a ring tomorrow to see if they found anything.

And yeah considering that they are quite good there they seem pretty reasonable with their pricing. Although I take my rabbits to P@H vets for their vacs :p

aw just wanted to sya hope McMac is okay xoxo
And if you want gorgeous guineas I'd go ahead and do it now, I think it comes from abroad, can't remember but mine took about 3 weeks x

I'd give them a call in the morning, and that way they can find time during the day ;)

It sounds like they won't be too badly priced hopefully! We don't charge much where I work (I think it's about £15-£25) and we're expensive!

Gorgeous Guineas stuff is based in Reading I think rolleyes I ordered shampoo & it came the day after I ordered :)

I don't think it does come from abroad but I could be wrong. My stuff came within a week ?/

Yeah mine comes within a few days. It does come recorded delivery though, so make sure you're in :))

I just ordered some boarly shampoo for big dave who seems to like sitting in his wee lately rolleyes

Really lol? mallethead I had this idea that it was in australia lmao! It did take ages tho...

Any news on mcmac? :)

Well I tried ringing up yesterday but they hadn't got around to all of the testing yet so I am going to give them a ring today to see if they have found anything. Poor McMac, all his scabby bits look a little swollen, probably from scratching and stuff

Just gave them a bell and they say the vets are dealing with an emergency so they can't ask just yet and to call back a little later
