BigTigPig

Hi All,

Tigger has managed to break one of her front teeth which then resulted in two others snapping low down and the final one coming out completely (as far as I can see). She is finding it quite difficult to eat by herself. Is there anything anyone can recommend - foods etc that she might find easier. The vet isn't sure if they will grow back but I am thinking that those that are just broken should do?

Any other advice?

TIA

is there anything left of any of the 4 teeth? If so, they'll grow back but you may have to cut food in long strips in the mean time so she can eat with her back teeth sort of thing. If they have fallen out, it's more serious although I don't know what to suggest except wait for someone more toothly experienced than me to respond...

Cut your veg in strips or puree it and spoon it.

thanks. 3 of them still have a stump but one of them seems to have gone completely. I've been cutting stuff up for her and almost shoving it in at times as she's so keen to eat it but can't get it in. some things are definitely easier for her than others

she'll need help, especially with hay. Be sure she has things to chew so the back teeth don't over grow whilst the others are growing back.

it sounds like she may have had an accident. Finlay lost teeth twice, twice after an accident (fell off dining table and jumped back into (closed) cage).

This makes me sound like such a bad mum...:(

I've been watching her and she seems ok-ish with hay. it takes her a bit longer but she can eat it so I just make sure there is plenty of the stuff even more than usual.

she's a bar chewer, always has been. this actually happened while she was at the vets waiting for an xray.

Hopefully, they'll grow back! Make sure that her back teeth don't overgrow and she has enough roughage to eat.

I am no tooth expert, though!

Your pig will adapt to the loss of the front teeth. If you wish you could put out some Critical Care or some other form of mashed pellets, such as Burgess Guinea Excel.

I find vit c really helps the teeth stay strong, sam breaks his teeth from time to time. You could syringe feed (1ml is best i find) the mash or roll it into little balls. Make sure she gets enough water to. The teeth should grow back :) Sam only has 3 teeth now (root came out last year) and he has adabpted well

Leo's teeth are always breaking, they get to long and suddenly snap, never completely out tho, are they getting enough calcium? The stubs will grow back, pretty fast as well =] Don't worry to much.

"I find vit c really helps the teeth stay strong,"

Is this from a text-book or from your own observation? If it is the latter, how did you prove it?

Hi BigTigPig, sorry to hear your pig has lost all his teeth!

Cubing the fresh food tends to help the pig a little more than slicing or grating it, as they do need something fairly chunky to grab and then take back to the molars to chew. Not too big, obviously, but just enough that the pig is able to pick it up.

A diet deficient in calcium could lead to weak teeth, and I believe a diet deficient in Vitamin C could also lead to it. Ensuring a wide variety of fresh foods are given daily, there is unlikely to be a deficiency.

If the teeth have snapped, it is unlikely the roots have come out - so the teeth should grow back fairly quickly.

I have seen mentioned on various sites and from my experience with a pig who has had broken teeth i think it does make difference.
