My friend and her (soon to be) 4 year old both have birthdays coming up. I know she would love her son to have a small pet but we agreed it would not be practical (small flat, wouldn't get enough attention etc). I was going to get them one of these as a combined present:

But after looking at Youtube videos, it turns out they giggle and make stupid "oooooh" noises rather than conventional guinea sounds. Which has completely put me off lol.
I have also looked at those Zhu Zhu hamsters but they have the same problem ... they talk. {:|

Anybody have any other ideas? Similar products?

I had a stuffed toy guinea pig when i was little that was completely silent!

Have you seen those hamsters that have batteries in and they roll around in plastic balls?

Also, have you thought about a hamster for your friend's son? They only need cleaning around once a week, require exercise through use of an exercise ball and don't take up that much time or space?

And there's lots of fun tubes and hideys that can be made to keep the lil man occupied and interested! I used to love my hamsters

I forgot to mention - they already have a puppy, and I wouldn't trust him not to hurt a small pet. He is very ... active.

Ahh yeah a puppy could knock the cage off or break into the plastic ball!

How about some new toys for him to play with the puppy with? Encourages him to keep interested then
