I've been asking many many questions since the unplanned acquisition of eight neglected guinea pigs at the beginning of December 2019. This forum has been a great help as I navigate my new piggie mom status. I thought I would start a thread here introducing the whole herd where I can share stories :)

Here are the first six:

JK has quickly wormed his way into my heart. He is one of two males, although for the first four days he tricked me into thinking he was a female. He loves his veggies, loves lap time, solicits petting and is generally outgoing and happy. He & Fleur are good friends (through the bars) and I can't wait to get them in together once he is running on empty. He was neutered January 6th so the countdown is on.

Nymphadora was my most skittish piggie and it took almost a month before she wasn't running and hiding any time I was in the room. Now she's my loudest wheek'r, the pushiest of the bunch and the first to line up for her fresh veggies. I think she is the dominant sow of the bunch, she definitely caused the most drama on the first few days in the new cage, but is quite settled now.

Ginny is a quieter pig, not much of a wheek'r and I think resides more at the bottom of the hierarchical structure. She now comes to the front to get her veggies too, but she isn't very pushy and is easily frightened. She is also the most dramatic when I have to pick her up. She does come up to the bars for a visit on occasion.

Bellatrix started off as my more friendly pig, she's definitely likes to have her opinions heard! She is pretty bonded to Nymphadora and they are often hanging out together. She is a particular fan of bell peppers and will push everyone except Nymphadora out of the way when those are on the table. She is one of the few still gaining weight, so I am keeping her on pregnancy watch.

Fleur is my beauty queen, she is absolutely gorgeous and I think she knows it. She is still very skittish when I'm reaching in the cage, but she is also the one that requires the most handling to keep those flowing locks mat-free. She spends most of her time in the log hidey or sitting up on the log house to be close to JK. She is very loud about her love of kale and parsley, but not quite ready to take it from my hand. She hangs back a little bit and waits until someone else drops their piece. Of all the girls, she is the one gaining the most weight, so she is also on pregnancy watch.

Newt is a funny little character. He is also male and was neutered in early January. When I tried to bond Newt & JK to avoid the neuter Newt was the bully of the bunch. He currently resides in a split cage with JK and he rumble struts all the time. He is willing to take food from my hands, but then runs off to his hidey with it, always jumping through the window instead of the easy opening. Cilantro seems to be his favourite treat.

I will introduce the others in the next post!

Here are the other two, they didn't get a special photoshoot yet as my phone broke! These two are Minerva and Myrtle.

Minerva is my only short hair piggie. She's pretty high up in the pecking order and is the only one that doesn't get pushed around by Nymphadora. She seems pretty easy going overall and doesn't seem to have a preferred friend, she snuggles in with everyone. She's the easiest to handle and quite interactive. She doesn't care what veggies I'm offering she wants them all and FAST! She's the first one I've tried clicker training with and am seeing if I can get her skateboarding :)

Myrtle is so pretty with her broken black, red and white. She took a few days to settle in, but now is out and about all the time. Probably my most frequent popcorn-er! She loves her veggies a little too much, particularly kale, she gets so excited she misses me holding the one out in front of her because she's trying to steal from the other girls.

Finally we have two other piggies I'm helping out due to all the support I've received from friends. The story on these two is they were owned by an elderly lady and were her beloved pets. Unfortunately, the lady went downhill mentally and the piggies were not getting great care. Grandma has been moved into a care home and is unable to take them with her. Her granddaughter has taken them in, but can't keep them. The granddaughter contacted me through my facebook page where I've been documenting my journey with the original eight. I have to really think if I have the capability to take on two more, though part of me thinks is there that big of a difference between eight & ten?!

I brought the granddaughter a larger cage I got off Kijiji in December and some hay & quality pellets. We also discussed veggies, etc. and printed off the feeding guide from this forum. One of the girls is quite chunky, the other is quite thin and has a couple bald patches towards the spine. They are supposedly about 2 years old. So, not my piggies, but could end up here at some point potentially.

This is Xena and Cersei

Thanks all I am doing the best I can and learning as I go to do better! I took some weights last night and because I'm a data nerd I charted them :). I was surprised the difference between the boars (JK & Newt) and the sows.

Wow, you are doing so great by them all- this forum is fab for learning :-)

I always chart my herd's weights too but in a line graph so I can track everyones weekly weights together!

Very cute. How many girls are in that cage? 6? And how big is it?

Awwww! They are all so cute xx

@Siikibam There are currently six girls in the that cage. It's a 6x4 C&C, not sure the actual dimensions as the panels are slightly more than 30cm.

Once the neutered boars are "empty", it will likely be down to five in that cage (1 boar + 4 females), but that's still to be decided :)

Wow, what a marvellous job do have done taking these piggies in, they are looking really healthy and happy x

Well my plan to chart weights to help me figure out who may Ben pregnant has gone awry! Either I didn't have the scale zero'd correctly, my piggies are still gaining weight after coming home, the veggies last night made them extra fat today or almost everyone is very pregnant including neutered male, Newt :)

You will notice I have two extras, Pansy & Parks came to foster on the weekend. Pansy is very little and needs some vet care. Will post more about them later. Their previous owner (now in a home) clearly loved them they cam weigh a well equipped 2x5 C&C with a loft. Sad things went downhill :(

Great spreadsheet there! I would definitely think about giving little Pansy a top up feed perhaps and see if she puts on any weight. I’d also weigh her daily at the same time so you can see a trend, hopefully she will settle and start putting on weight x

I posted about Pansy's bald spots in the Health Forum:
Bald spots on Pansy

I took her and Parks to the vet today for a once over. Nothing showed up under the microscope on the skin scrape so the vet is theorizing stress and/or diet to be the culprit. Both girls have overgrown teeth, but with access to hay the vet wants to give it three months and do a re-check to see if things are improving before taking any further action.

He also suggested potentially trying to bond Pansy with a different friend in case their is bullying happening. I haven't seen any bullying, but it's definitely something to consider. My boys come off their post-neuter restrictions February 17, so that may be an opportunity. I'm open to all thoughts and ideas!
