My piggies have always been fed on guinea museli but are massive selective feeders. I've tried and failed to get them onto a pellet before, but no luck.
I've just bought burgess excel (the only one our local pet shop sells) and am wondering how long should i persevere as I know they'd rather have museli so they can only eat the tasty bits. I'd much rather they not be able to do this, so i figure i have to give it time
Reassure me they won't starve themselves. They have had and veg to keep their systems going if it takes a few days for them to realise this is all they are getting now....
Bump....help! They aren't eating it. I put it in yesterday late afternoon. They may have tried a bit, but certainly no obvious drop in food bowl levels. SHould i give up or persevere. They won't starve themselves will they.....
I'd run out of museli otherwise that's what i'd do! I know if i put museli in with the nuggets thought they wouldn't eat any nuggets at all....i think its cold turkey to get my piggies to try the nuggets.
I tried to mix the museli with the pellets and sure enough they only ate the museli {:|
Mine went cold turkey straight onto the pellets. Two of my boys love the pellets and constantly have an empty dish!
Bruce will tolerate the pellets and eats half of what i give him.
Humphrey took a few weeks till he was even eating a quater of them! he hated them! But he didn't starve to death and he still eats them now although he now eats alot more hay which i dare say is better for him!
That does, thanks. I soaked a few and hand fed them to max. He definately likes the taste. I wonder if they are a bit large for him. His teeth are fine and he eats museli and veg and hay just fine. Is soaking them bad....will that mean his teeth don't get worn down?
Dansak and Potter also enjoying it once soaked. Maybe i'll soak to try and ease the transition and use a little less water each time (worked with my dogs, soaking appeared to make the kibble smell stronger, hence they actually wanted to eat it! )
Try mixing some cheap museli in (and reduce the ratio of museli to pellet gradually)
Or you can try the hard mother approach and keep feeding it to them untill they eventually get the idea
I was using the oregano version of the pellets (they are a different size and shape) and they were fine on them and then my mum bought me the original pellets (moon shaped) so I gave them that but they didn't want to eat it so I mixed both bags together and it took a couple of days but they got the idea lol
as long as you have plenty of good hay and veg they wont starve
