Hi,
Just wondering I'm thinking about going home for the long weekend but am concerned about my guinea pig. I will be traveling in the car for 6 hours and then staying 1 full day and then traveling back again which is another 6 hours... Will this be to much or should I leave him home.. The thing about leaving him home is that I have no one to look after him.. What should I do?

I would opt for leaving them at home if at all possible. Travelling with them will just cause unnecessary stress for them.

Are you able to ask a neighbour/friend/family member to come and check on them when you're gone? It will take 5 minutes for someone to put some hay in the cage, fill up the pellet bowl, fill water bottles and check that they're happy and healthy. You could also make up a salad for them and leave it in a marked container in the fridge so your piggies can still have their veggies with minimal effort on the carer's part.

6 hours twice in three days is quite a long trip, but it is doable if you really haven't got anybody to look after your piggy (have you asked neighbours or is there a pet sitter where you are who would come in and feed him once a day?). Unless your piggy can be seen and fed once in 24 hours, I would rather take him with me. Three days is too long to leave him on his own.

If necessary, you can chop up his food and store his daily pellets in a labelled ice cream box, so whoever is coming to feed him, only has to empty the box and replenish the hay and water once a day. It's worked for me in short term emergencies. Your piggy will be very mucky when you come back, but for that short time he'll survive! ;)

That's the thing I have no one to come in and feed him while I'm away if I did I would definitely leave him... Also if I do decide to take him should I take his cage or will he be ok in a carrier the whole time

If you can, please take his cage, so he has got something familiar in the new place. Take a blanket to spread over the cage in a strange place to give him an additional feeling of security.

I think your piggy will miss you and get stressed being all alone. With the proper precautions and care, the piggy will be fine with you on the road
