I contracted ring worm from other guinea pigs then passed it to one of my own unknowingly. The vet appointment and medication together is $110... but I know for a fact this is ringworm and would like to do without the hassle of making a vet appointment. I had one trouble pig that had it all the time because he had stress issues, plus the dr diagnosed me with it, and this pig got it before when he was super young but was treated by another vet, so I know this is ringworm and I know he can handle ringworm meds, but the Dr will not treat him without seeing him and telling me what I already know.... for $110!

I am in the Grand Rapids, MI area but am willing to travel to Lansing or Kalamazoo if there is someone who knows of a cheaper vet in any of these areas. Or even if someone knows something over the counter because it is just the beginning and not very bad at all yet. I would really appreciate it!

Hi!

The best way to treat ringworm is with prescription only oral ketaconazole, which is now being used by exotics vets in the US (the corresponding UK brand is itrafungol, active ingredient itraconazole). It is not quite cheap, but much less stressful than any shampooing and and also more effective as it gets everwhere in the body. Please be aware that you will still have to give at least one bath at the end of any fungal treatment to mechanically remove any spores in the coat, which could cause a new outbreak at a later point.

Please take the time to read our ringworm care guide. It is very comprehensive and very practical - and very much based on our own 12 years of experience with what works and what not, and especially how to prevent a new outbreak! By now, we have pretty much found and addressed all the possible ways ringworm can be transmitted and how you can address them. Please invest in a good anti-fungal vet strength disinfectant (best buy in your life).
