I have a loan boar called Totts and he is approximately 18 months old. We have had him for over a year now and estimate he was 4/5 months old when we got him.
He is generally a lively, healthy and happy boy and lives in the lounge for maximum socialising with his humans. He is small for a boar and only just comes in above 1kg.
That said towards the end of last year he had a small hard lump come up on his belly near the belly button. I ruled out a tumour or abscess but popped him into the vets just in case They thought it maybe related to his belly button. The decision was taken to monitor it.
About 5 days later we noticed another one so he went straight back. They inserted a needle into the larger (first) lump but were unable to get enough material out for the lab. There was no obvious pus or fluid but it did reduce in size slightly following a hot compress (luckily Totts loves a good swaddle)
Since then the lumps have multiplied and grown into a small chain. Only a total of 2 have got to pea-sized and then we had them drained. The lump reduces in size but still feels very hard and definitely remains. They definitely do not bother him.
If it was a person I would be thinking a trichilemmal (aka Pilar) cyst as the hard shell is characteristic of this type of cyst. It is also very common for them to form in groups (>70%) But I have never heard of this cyst type on a cavy. I wondered if anybody else had? Or other ideas as to what they maybe ....
I don't really want to put him through a general to have them removed but it is beginning to look like that is our best option ....
