Trimmign back self blacks nails

Hi
Just got new addition to the family in the shape of a self black boar. His nails are totally black and will cause me grief when I come to trim them.

Has anyone out there got any suggestions of how to make this task easier? Should I just clip a tiny bit at the tip but do it more frequently?

I always clip a tiny bit off black nails or you could try to put them against the light, sometimes you can see the quick :)
 
i have the same problem poppy is black so I'm going to get the vet to show me tomorrow how to cut hers but i think i will end up doing a little bit at a time like you said until i get more confidient O0
 
Some of mine have all black or some black claws and I wimp out and clip a little off every week :)
 
You can clip back a tiny bit every 2 weeks or so, try shining a light to find the quick or if you have lots of time and a patient piggy you could try filing which although takes longer is the safest way.

ive thought about filing but never knew whether this would work, she is still only young you think it would be better for me to file?
 
Get a mini torch and hold it between your knees when you do it, then it lights up the nail and you can see the quick :)
 
Thanks to all who replied. Great tip SL I'll try that. O0 Think they'll need doing soon as he keeps scratching me when I pick him up. Fingers and paws crossed! :)
 
::) ::) me don't do it, as Duke has black 3 paws only 1 white so i get Traci :smitten: :smitten: or one of the other vet nurses to trim them for him O0

I've tried and i was lousy at it and he squirmed and wriggled and i also made a mess and nicked him a couple of times... stressed me and him out so i thought blast it, i have to have his toofies done so get them to do the manicure and pedicure at the same time O0

Hi,yep small trim every week here,cant be sure where the quick is so wont take the chance :-\
