Trudy told her special young slave yesterday evening that she didn't want to put weight on her front right paw. Big slave had a good look and gentle feel all over and couldn't find anything obvious. So after a nail trim for good measure, Trudy was put to bed with the ominous words "we'll see how she is in the morning".

Still not wanting to weight bear on that paw today, so I'll be calling the vet in a minute. I expect she has sprained her leg with an awkward movement while out in the run. She would probably like a little metacam but neither pig has ever been prescribed any so I have none on hand.

Oh poor Trudy. I’m glad she told her special slave though. Hopefully the vet will be able to see her today and make her feel better

Good luck Trudy. Pepper says he hopes you get some yummy medicine. He’s having some at the moment and he LOVES it ❤️

Appointment made for 11:20 today. I've plugged the car in to top up charge (one slight problem with electric vehicles, you can't top up in two minutes like with petrol when you have an unexpected journey!) and checked the vet-fund account in case they want to x-ray.... never needed one of those either so I have no idea what this vet may charge. Need to get Trudy comfortable though, her special slave reckons Trudy is acting quite unlike her usual pigsonality, so she must be in pain 😢

I will tell Hazelnut to only hold Trudy's left paw while on paw-holding duty!

I hope the vet can find the problem. Good that you managed to get an appointment so quickly. Let us know what the vet says. Meg says that hopefully Trudy will have some Metacam. Meg has 0.3ml Dog Metacam twice a day long term for her spinal arthritis and is a Metacam Junkie!

Hope Trudy’s appt goes well and she get to taste a little bit of Metacam, and she heals up well x

The nice vet has diagnosed a shoulder sprain, probably an awkward landing when popping in or out of the mini shelter hutch in the lawn run. We will give pain relief and watch for a few days for progress.

She has prescribed 1.1ml dog metacam twice daily. Trudy is 1kg. Looking at the advice on another thread, is that a bit high? She is an exotic specialist and this is John Chitty's practice so I'm hoping it is OK.

Trudy accepted her first dose with suspicion and dribbled a bit on my arm, we'll see what she thinks at bedtime!

Hope Trudy starts feeling better soon. As for the metacam, I’m afraid I’ve no idea.

If in doubt you can call your vet to ask, but my own experience is that when Ralph (1kg) was in a lot of pain he had 1ml metacam (dog) twice daily. If it’s for a short period they can metabolise it quickly with no long term harm. I expect a shoulder sprain is very painful & inflamed so maybe that’s the reason for the high dose. I’m guessing it’s just for a few days?

Yes, just for a few days. She said I should update her on Friday as to how Trudy is getting on. I definitely want Trudy to be getting enough to feel the difference while the sprain heals.

That makes perfect sense. It will help reduce the inflammation, take the pain away and get her using the shoulder again. Hope she makes good progress.

It's nice of Trudy to let you know what happened, sometimes my pigs are really bad at communicating what exactly is the matter! Leela wants her to know that she has had a couple of sore paws from awkward encounters with ramps and sometimes a little metacam is all you need to get you over the hump and feeling confident using that paw again!

Trudy would like to thank everyone for their good wishes. She is being allowed lawn time on the understanding that she rests her paw while munching. And with a safe, soft, single storey SnugPigs tunnel from Auntie @Lavinia instead of the mini hutch with the naughty ramp that makes her do stunts that go wrong.

Unfortunately only Trudy's little butt was on view 🤣.

When I spoke to my husband about Trudy's need to rest he asked in a tentative way if that meant no pancaking? Turned out he meant popcorning 🤣 he is not a piggy guy!

Trudy here, hope everypig on the Forum is doing well. I am still not enjoying putting weight on my poor sprained shoulder, so I'm lazing around on a pile of expensive hay. Yes I do that every morning, but today I'm doing it extra lazily. My big slave says I have to go on with this strange metacam stuff, but I'm not going to be just slurping it down from the syringe. I know what comes in syringes normally, it is Critical Care and you can chew on it and it tastes yumyumyum. Metacam is completely different. So I'm compromising (because we can't expect the hooman to compromise) and licking small drops of it off big slave's finger. This means when I finish each drop I'm perfectly positioned for a little nip 😈

Well done Trudy! That way it lasts longer and you can have the yummyness for longer. Now why didn't I think of that?

Lots of healing wheaks
