Well my pigs have previously had acupuncture,chiropractor treatment, ultrasound therapy massage treatment a CT scan to name but a few things and now my 7 1/2 year old lady is going to have 6 sessions of laser light therapy to help with her arthritis - my piggy savvy vet Rachel Mowbray over at Vale Vets in Dursley has just got a unit in and she has used it on a couple of other piggies and says it should make Truffs more mobile and reduce the pain from her arthritis (she is on metacam long term ) - so a quick phone call to exotic direct tomorrow to make sure it's covered - it should be as they have covered everything else for everyone else - its £32 a session with 6 sessions for the price of 5 - so will see how she gets on with it.

I hope Exotic insurance will fund the treatment. I had a 7yr old guinea pig who arthritis was so bad the back leg bones were fused together. So I am interested to know if this type of treatment can ease any of the difficulties and pain caused by arthritis.

Oh wow that's amazing! Fascinating, you just don't hear of alternative treatments for animals as most people just put them on painkillers or to sleep

If you ever get the chance, I would love it if you created a thread (if you haven't already) about the various treatments you've tried, what for and how they helped.

Thankfully I'm not in the position to need these things as my piggies are young but it's always good to be informed before it's needed!

I am assuming that more treatments would be needed later on as things stiffened up again - that's what is was like when my Nuggets had his chiropractor treatments - a short course and then he needed the odd top up - spoke to exotic direct today and they told me when they renewed Truffs insurance they put in an exclusion for arthritis that I didn't notice when I got her renewal forms through - so she isn't covered for it! I think that's really off - and it's because they had to pay out for x-rays a GA and a years supply of Metacam last year to diagnose it ( she was investigated for weight loss and the x rays showed the arthritis) - Rachel has used the unit on other guinea pigs and she says it definitely did help - might need to look into this exclusion because there was no break in the insurance cover and they didn't exclude Bumble for all the bladder stone ops he had over the course of 2 1/2 years!
