Hello everyone,

I have two sows and have had them for about 5 years now, so they cant be any older than about 5 years and a couple of months.

There has never been any issues with them, apart from the occassional fight.

Anyway, recently I noticed one of them constantly (and I mean constantly) is licking the backside of the other. This has gone on for a good few days now.

Anyway, last night I picked up the sow who was getting licked and she had a kind of discharge on her bum area.

So, am I right in thinking she's in heat firstly, and secondly, should the other sow be licking it off her?

Like I say they have never done this before and ive never noticed this discharge before. I'm pretty sure the other sow was in heat (for the first time) a month or two back as she was super grumpy, but surely these sows shouldn't start getting in heat only at the age of 5+?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello Mancity,
First thing I would do is take the sow with the discharge to your vet. Any kind of discharge from male or female is something to worry about. Sows reach breeding age at just a few months old, so will start coming into heat from a very early age. I once had two sows that were sisters and they would get grumpy and maybe fight when one came into season. It is just a dominance thing. I have two different sisters now, and I can tell when one is in season as she gets very interested in the boar next door! I hope that this is of some help.

Hello Mancity, Welcome to the forum.

As 7sueakers has said above discharge is not normal at all and your girl really needs a check up at the vet. Your other piggie was most likely cleaning her friend because of it.

Piggies do have seasons and sometimes more dominance will be displayed during that time than other seasons, e.g. rumbling etc...

Here is a link to our recomended vets locator in case your need to find a cavy savy vet http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/locator/vets.html

Please have your girl checked by a vet; discharge like that is not normal. It can come from the uterus or the bladder, but the symptom is not typical for a bladder infection.
