Hi. I am new to the forum. I have two pigs that live in an outside hutch and have had them for a few weeks after they were rehomed from someone at work.

My question is regarding underfeeding them. Currently they are fed once a day, in the evening. They are given a bowl of a variety of fresh veg, a small bowl of dry pellets and some hay in a manger.

The thing is that when I check on them in the morning everything is gone, all the pellets and hay.

Should I be feeding them more often i.e. twice a day?

Sometimes I give them more hay during the day and they jump on it and it is gone very quickly.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

my 3 get unlimited nuggets & hay...usually refill when it is empty! then a selection of friut and veg on an afternoon. hope that helps, but mine have access to grass all day too!

Guinea pigs need around 1 good cupful of veggies a day. This is best, and more interesting for them if divided into two servings. Hay can be topped up at the same time, and pellets need to be always available. Extra veggie treats can always be given when you have them out for cuddles. If they do not have hay/food constantly to nibble on, it can affect their teeth. If you are feeding muesli style food, they will always eat the favourite bits first, then after a while the less fave bits, so I only change the dish of this once a day, for those of mine who are on it. x

Guinea pigs should really be eating all day, unlike dogs or cats who are best fed once a day. So I'd feed them in the morning and night. Maybe the veg in the morning and dry food/pellets at night.

If they're still young, under six months, then you can leave pellets out all day.

They should have hay there all day, as much as they can eat, and water all day. :)

Good luck with them :)

Up to 6 - 9 months a good quality pellet should be available at all times, then after that you can begin cutting down the amount you feed them gradually.
As said hay should be unlimited and available at all times.

I make sure mine have a mountain of hay at all times, they also have a big dish of dry food available and another bowl of veg and some hidden away in their tube and in their bed, so they have something to look for!

I own horses too and i treat them the same, they need food to at all times to keep their guts moving. xx>>>

Thanks for your replies. I really appreciate your advice. They have a water bottle so have access to water all day and hay on the bed area.

I think I'll start giving them some veg in the morning and evening and split the pellets between the two feeds, as well as topping up their hay during the day.

Thanks again!:)p
