Hi all,

I've just checked both my boar's teeth and noticed one of them has one top tooth shorter than the other. It isn't slanted in any way, its almost as if the end of one has chipped off, only by a couple of mm. He is still eating and drinking fine and seems happy in himself, do I need to take him to a vet for them to be trimmed back evenly? And also what could have caused this? Could it be anything to do with problems with his back teeth?
Both of the bottom teeth are a normal healthy length, it is just the one top tooth. He is also 1 & 1/2 years old.

Thanks in advance :)

I would be very cautious about letting an inexperienced vet mess with a piggy's teeth, sometimes vets clip too short when there is no need and make things worse! Maybe @furryfriends (TEAS) has some advice, she has a lot of experience with dental issues and sadly dental issues made worse by inexperienced vets!

Hi!

It is most likely that the tip of the incisor has broken off and the problem will sort itself out in a matter of days the broken tooth will continue to grow. I would check whether the tooth is still firm in the gum; only if it isn't sitting firmly (i.e. it is broken further down as it runs along the jaw line to the root just in front of the back teeth) should you consult with a vet.

In a healthy dental system the incisors are self-sharpening as they work against each other. Any meddling, especially from an inexperienced vet, will unbalance that system and make the picking up and cutting job that the incisors are designed for impossible.

I would leave well alone as far as vets are concerned if he is healthy and eating well, he has probably just chipped it. It should wear even again. If he has any trouble eating then obviously seek out a very experienced piggie vet who has had success with dentals, a very rare breed x

thanks everyone so much for your replies, saved me a needless trip to the vets:) his teeth are starting to become more even every day!

Hello. I am new to this forum. My Cavie has a chipped upper and I need some advice. Can anyone help me?

piggie teeth grow back faster than you think when this happened to my boy it had grown back almost completely before I could even get a vet appointment so that was a wasted trip. just keep an eye on it as long as the bottom teeth aren't growing too long as a result and the piggie is eating normally and the tooth isn't wobbly all should be fine it is perfectly normal and should resolve its self.
