Basically Mabel my little girl (just short of a year old) has had a wet bum for a few months, it is a bit smelly and it is more like discharge than wee. The vet gave us some antibiotic cream which didn't help and she has now had 10 days of oral antibiotics too which haven't helped. I am taking her back on Thursday. She is fine in herself, weeing and pooing fine, eating and putting on weight. He said it could possibly be an infection in the uterus and she may need to be spayed which obviously I would be very cautious about doing. Mabel is a recent addition after Bella died earlier this year and I don't want to put her at risk. Anyone had anything similar or had their girl spayed?

I once had a piggy was leaking urine and smelt awful :( an ultrasound scan showed that she had really bad cystitis and was full of sludge so she had a bladder flush (We thought it was a womb infection so was preparing for an emergency spay) sadly we lost her a few days later due to something unrelated.

I've never had a piggy spayed but there are many members who have @Wiebke had a frail 6 year old piggy emergency spayed and she sailed through the op.

Many years ago my first piggy (Rosie) had a similar problem.
There were less options for guinea pigs back then, but I was lucky that my local vet in London at the time had a special interest in exotics.
We did try various barrier creams and antibiotics, but in the end it was a womb infection and she suffered a prolapse and had an emergency spay.
I was terrified we were going to loose her, but despite being a little old (around 3.5 years) she recovered really well and went on to live happily for a few more years.
She was an ex breeder piggy through, so the vet felt this may have contributed to her womb problems.

But maybe you girl just needs a bit longer on the antibiotics.
When Ruby had bladder sludge earlier this year it took sevral courses of antibiotics to finally get on top of it.

Hi! I would also recommend to have the reproductive system checked. Has she had an x-ray or scan of her uterus to see whether it is enlarged, fluid filled or has a growth in it?
I needed to have my Cariad emergency spayed when she was found to not have a cystitis, but a grossly enlarged, fluid womb that was borderline pyometric (infection of the womb lining) and also contained a lump. She did come well through her op, but I was lucky as she was seen and treated by a very experienced guinea pig neutering/spaying vet because she was a rather frail 700g.

How piggy savvy is your vet in case you need to opt for a spaying operation?

My vet is a guinea pig specialist which is good (Trinity Vets in Kent). I suppose I'll have to wait and see. Glad to hear that some of your piggies have been spayed and have been ok.

I would recommend that a scan be carried out, too. I’ve had several sows spayed for differing reasons including one for pyrometra (womb infection). All my sows came through their surgeries without any major problems.

I’ve recently had Jemimah spayed for ovarian cysts and she has made a full recovery.
We had a wobbly few days immediately post surgery but extra painkillers and tlc brought her through.

Hope you can get little Mabel sorted without the need for surgery - will keep you in my thoughts
