lawnmower piggy

just wondered if we could have a pinned section on unsafe garden plants?

seen some nice pictures today of peoples pets running around the garden but I'm unsure wether or not some of the plants are suitable?

I'm no expert myself so would be relying on others?

I'm a member of a cage & aviary bird forum and they have a section on plants suitable for aviarys and birds

we have a sticky that goes in that direction, though it is mostly about safe and unsafe vegetables as opposed to green stuff growing on peoples lawns. I am all for it, a thread like that would really come in handy.

However maybe we should post it in "food" rather than "housing" ;)

I think its an excellent idea! I also would like to know what garden plants are poisonous.

Azaleas and any bulb grown plant (like Daffodil, Hyazinth etc.), Rhubarb, Ivy, Night shade, Lilies all are poison for piggies and buns alike. There are lots more though.

buttercups too are poisonous to cavys. They were the only thing growing in our garden - had to pour boiling water over them to kill them off (boiling water kills everything, and no chemicals left behind to harm my pets), then put grass seed down.

It would be very useful for us to have a poisonous plants list to protect our little ones.

Very good list. Can I just add that the moss which is found on lawns is very toxic, also bluebells and clover.

OMG! It is a miracle our piggies have survived so long in my ignorance! Perhaps they have a good inbuilt self preservation mechanism!

clover are you sure its poisonus my back garden lawn is full of it and my piggies have been fine with it and it is on the list as being ok :o

Sorry,my mistake,I meant daisy!.Clover, both red and white is safe in small amounts. The flower and leaves are o.k.Think I was having a senior moment there!

Phew thanks Mary! I have been giving mine Clover for ages so I was thinking they are stong things! :D I have been purposely picking the clover as they love it! I have some minor buttercups but not many but avoid them! I won't let Peter cut the grass!...lol :D

There is a type of clover, called OXALIS, which IS poisenous to piggies and buns. I only know that it has yellow flowers and the leaves looks different from the normal clover.

Oxalis is wood sorrel. It is NOT poisonous. The reason why it's called Oxalis is because its leaves contain high levels of oxalic acid which can, in high levels, prevent absorbtion of calcium. This could obviously contribute to bladder stones in piggies but if they were to ingest some it is unlikely to kill them unless they eat a field of the stuff.
