Yesterday I noticed a dark grey, powdery stain around the outside of one of the nostrils of one of my sows. I cleaned it with a a piece of cotton wool, and looked inside her nose, it appeared to be clean. She's fine in herself, active, demanding veggies and popcorning around. I assumed it was dirt of some kind.

This morning I again noticed the same grey substance, this time inside the same nostril (there was no dirt inside her nose yesterday, and I had cleaned it well, so it must have appeared overnight). She's still perfectly fine in herself, breathing normally, no signs of illness or distress. It doesn't appear as though it's something she inhaled, but something that comes from within. I couldn't take a photo, as she's very wiggly and the thing is inside her nose, but the best way I can describe it is graphite powder. There was no hint of red or brown on the cotton wool, so I'm fairly confident it isn't blood. It's also way too powdery to be snot. It mostly looks like dirt. I checked their cage, but there are no sources of dirt - they just have their fleece, hay and pellets. Her two cage mates are fine. And it does look like the grey substance comes from one of her nostrils...

A vet visit is already scheduled, but I wanted to check if any of you guys have any ideas what this might be. It's really strange, and it's getting me worried.

My only thought would be the start of a URI? the dust from the hay could be making the discharge a grey colour? I have not come across it before. How is her breathing?

Hmmm... I would query the start of a URI with some nasal discharge that is then getting environmental debris (hay dust, etc.) stuck to it? Though it seems like that wouldn't be grey... At any rate, it's good that you are getting it checked!

Thank you for your messages!

Yes, her breathing is perfectly fine and noiseless - we had an extra long cuddle to make sure she's eating and fine. I even tried to listen to her chest with a stethoscope and didn't hear anything out of the ordinary, but I could be wrong - I'm not a vet, after all. She also popcorned quite a lot while they had their daily walk...

Her vet appointment is for Saturday, but the vet did tell me to bring her in, if I get concerned. I'll keep you posted

We went to the vet yesterday. By then, the grey discharge had disappeared, and the vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. So it will remain a medical mystery, but I'm happy to know she's fine and healthy.

I'm beginning to think our vet suspects I have something like Munchausen by proxy guinea pig, but I can't help worrying that the one time I decide to wait and not have them seen right away will be the time they're really ill.
