Haven't been able to get on for some time. After Baytril, Bactrim, Septrin (same thing as Bactrim I think) Peanut Butter has started on Zithromax today. If this doesn't work he is going to see our one and only piggy specialist practice in Brisbane.

He was in at the vet's yesterday getting his monthly dental and checkup for his UTI. Still a red penis. He was there 3 hours and the vet could not get a urine sample out of him - told her she now knows what I go through trying to get one! She said there was just nothing in his bladder. That may be his problem, he may not be drinking enough. I have seen him at his water bottle but only about a quarter of the time I see Hazelnut drinking.

I was thinking of syringing water into PB on a regular basis. Anyone have any idea of quantity and frequency that would be good?

Aww poor little man. Maybe giving cucumber and melon may help as it has a high water content.

I'm not officially sure but with Nutty I just syringed until he didn't want anymore. When he would take it it was 3 or so 1ml syringe fulls every 2 hours (as advised by my vet)

Hope that helps and PB is feeling better soon

Unfortunately PB follows Hazelnut's lead and will not eat anything Hazelnut won't eat. Hazelnut only eats leafy greens, herbs, carrots, dandelions and grass. I have always served all that stuff with water still on after washing. You can't get Hazelnut to even sniff at anything else. PB will start to eat, notice Hazelnut is not eating it and then stops.

Thanks so much, I will begin that regimen. I was ever so sorry to hear you Nutty didn't make it 8...

Hi there, sorry to hear about Hazelnut's Recurring bladder problem

I have several piggies that for one reason or another need have their bladders kept moving, I find the best way to do this is to give them to more watery vegetables like cucumber red peppers celery,

but some piggies , as Hazelnut won't eat these, another method I use to increase their water intake is to juice the vegetables they do like, and just feed it to them by syringe,

most piggies will readily take this like a duck to water I wouldn't do it too fast as you could upset the tummy, and the last thing you need on top of a UTI is runny Poo's

Also if she were my pig I would cut back on all the green leafy veg especially the dandelions as whilst dandelions they may be good for the bladder in the "short term" they are high in minerals, the same as the majority of green leaf vegetables, which could lead to sludge

Incidentally a red penis is not uncommon, a specially with a boar that is producing sludge

Thanks for that. Never thought of syringing juiced veggies! Great idea. They don't have dandelions every day, only once a fortnight really, as I understood they had a diuretic effect. While Peanut Butter continues to have a red penis he has never had sludge. He was originally diagnosed with a UTI because his wee had proteins, blood and bacteria in it, his lymph glands were enlarged and he squeaked when weeing. He did not seem to have calcium deposits. While the last urine sample seemed clear my vet was worried about the continuing red penis hence the continued anti-biotics. But if a red penis is common in boars, then maybe we are medicating him for nothing? Where could I get info on boars and red penises? At the height of his infection his penis was red all along the shaft but now it is just the tip.

Hi
My boar Bumble had never ending UTIs that would nearly clear up and then come back - was on septrin and Baytril for nearly 3 months before I took him to an exotics specialist who ultrasounded him and found a kidney stone - I have to syringe feed him extra water daily in the form of 2ml of fizzy water 3 times a day - the vet hoping that the gas in the water will help to push the stone out of the kidney - he is also on a very low calcium diet .

I would also recommend using juiced veg or serving more juicy veg in his diet.

Piggies that are not great drinkers are more likely to come down with bladder problems.

Is Peanut still on metacam? Some strains and forms of bladder infection don't react well to antibiotics. Perhaps you can find out more if you and your vet research interstitial cystitis. It is more a condition that you manage than one you can cure.

Yes he will be getting an ultrasound at the specialist's if the Zithromax makes no difference and we have 5 more days of that. He did have an X-ray that showed no stones, but X-rays are not definitive. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I just did not feel this could be only a UTI going on for so long.

Metacam is a pain killer? Peanut Butter was on Tramal with the Baytril and Bactrim/Septrin but not with the current Zithromax as he has not squealed in pain when weeing. Thanks for the link on interstitial cystitis. I will pass it on to the vet this morning. She is very good about doing research and working with me.

It is only 7am Saturday here and already I am wishing the day was done and it was Sunday so I can relax. Have to go to the chemist to fill my migraine script, try to get another PB urine sample to take to the vet, the dog has a vet's appt for a scratched paw that she is constantly licking, work at my lapidary club's annual gem show today and find time to vote in Australia's federal election being held today. We have compulsory voting too, so no getting out of it. Phew - how many hours in the day?

Metacam is both a painkiller and anti-inflammatory (the technical term is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID).
I have found that it helps best with those of my piggies that haven't responded much to antibiotics when they are having an acute phase.

You and your vet may also consider this dietary thread here that has been written by a member who has researched this quite thoroughly: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/...m-diet-for-piggies-an-option-to-be-considered
I have found that a low calcium diet works better for me than the ph : ca diet.

Thanks Wiebke. I will ask for the metacam when I go in today. We have been following the diet guidelines on guinea lynx plus our own one and only Brisbane birds and exotics vet practice has an online interactive diet chart. But we will look at the 2 forum links you've supplied and see if we can do better.
