Thought you might appreciate an update on the Potter's Tabritis. We've been giving them to our oldies for nearly 4 weeks now ( they were bunny hopping quite a lot which Peter Gurney reckons can be due to arthritis etc ).

We started with Peter Gurney's recommended dose of half a tablet each but I noticed they were weeing a lot more ( and it was a bit brown ) and their poos were a bit soft - this was probably down to some of the ingredients being diuretics and senna leaf being included too. So we decided after a week that whilst it was too soon to stop ( as we'd never know if they worked and the vet had given us the go ahead ) a quarter dose may be better.

This seems to have done the trick and the side effects have vanished, they each get a quarter of a tablet crushed and mixed with 1ml of water and they actually seem to enjoy it but here's the big news: the bunny hopping seems to have vanished!

Something else I noticed that may have nothing to do with the tablets - Moonpig had a little bald spot - I thought it was getting bigger as it became more prominent but on closer inspection I realised that her hair was in fact growing back, it was growing back darker though ( she's ginger, the new hair is coffee coloured) , which was why it looked like an expanding bald patch.

Now obviously this is probably completely coincedental and has nothing to do with the tablets but hubby says he's going to remember all of this for future reference anyway! Lol!

Thanks, good to know! And great that your oldies are so much better in themselves now!

Thank you for posting this, it's really helpful. I've just started giving this to one of my piggies and have been having some difficulty in getting her to take it, so I shall try a quarter. We haven't been to the vet - yet. Apple is now a good 5 and a half and I've noticed that over the last few months, she has been less agile, with a strong tendency to lie down, rather than run about. Over the last week or so, this has got worse, so I shall give it another few days and see how she is. How long did it take for your piggies to seem better?

I can be a bit pre-occupied at times I admit so it only really occurred to me in the past week or so that I hadn't seen any bunny hopping for a while, but if I remember correctly Peter Gurney said he started to see a difference after around one week. They still spend a lot of time snoozing but then they're oldies so they're allowed ;) but I can confidently say that the bunny hop has vanished. :(|)

Thank you, I'll keep an eye on her. I read PG also and wondered what you had found. Not sure, though if we may need a vet visit sooner....

Other people might disagree with me on this, but I would discuss any new medication with a vet before I started giving it to my pigs - regardless of who recommended it. Good luck either way though, I hope it works for you.

Thank you, Little Pig, for your comment. I would agree, if I had a vet I trusted....

I agree with that too - I discussed the tabritis with our vet and took a list of ingredients in with me, can no-one recommend a good exotic vet in your area? Maybe start a new thread. Hope you have some luck. x

Thank you, I've emailed BAR. Until 2 years ago, we lived in Berkshire, and there were several cavy friendly vets there, but the vets around here seem more towards large animals, farm animals etc and the one we went to didn't really inspire my confidence. I did try posting on another thread, but someone else was also asking about Devon, with no joy.
Will let you know if I get any info.

I'm so glad you've updated.........i had it on my list to ask you about them!
Great news about the bunny hopping.....now they can be chillaxed and not crickety :)

That's very interesting indeed - good to know they have improved so much!

not good news

sorry to hijack this thread, but didn't want to start another...
I emailed BAR and got an out of office reply-til 3rd Oct, so wouldn't hold my breath there.
Anyway, this morning when I went to see the girls, Apple started fitting. I decided to have another go at local vets, the one I saw was very kind, helpful etc, but it's not good news. She diagnosed a painful back, probably more than arthritis, so she gave her an anti inflamatory injection and we have to go back on Saturday, but she had another fit after the injection. Seems to suggest she hurt her back during a fit. If they continue, she will have to be pts 8...
I've put her back in her hutch, with Apricot and on lots of fresh hay etc, so she'll be quiet, but I'm worried about whether I should try to get her to drink/eat, what's the best way to make her as comfortable as poss? Any advice would be welcome
Thanks....

Poor Apple. You're probably likely to get more answers if you do start a new thread for her. I'm sure somebody will be along soon with experience in this area. Can't fitting be caused by mites?
Hope you find some help for her soon. (((((hugs)))))
x

Yes, I've read that, but she has no sign of any skin problems. Thanks for the suggestion though.
