Urgent help needed! Guinea pig dying

They should be given anaesthetic gas prior to the final injection being given. It must’ve been an awful experience for you and your guinea pig!
All of my piggies (and rats, chinchillas and hamsters) have been sent to rainbow bridge this way. How horrible for you and the poor piggy @Guineahelpneeded Hope your poor girl is in no pain and passes peacefully. If not definitely agree that an emergency vet trip is needed x

I just phoned another vet and they are £150 to PTS now. Its outrageous still. I asked how they do it and she said an injection in the heart. I asked if they would use gas first and she said "we can do. You can't be in with her when we do it" so that made me instantly not trust how they would do it. I'm definitely leaving her to die peacefully in the home she knows x

Thank you. She's called Bear. She's been such a wonderful pet. Got her when my 7year old was a toddler and they're best friends. He's totally heart broken 💔 she licks him like a dog, comes when called, does tricks. Very very sad x
Beautiful name for a piggie and a good age, she's obviously had a lovely life with your family. I have a 7 year old boy too and they can be such sensitive souls it will be difficult enough dealing with whats happening now whilst also thinking ahead about the impact on children. There will be lots of support available when the time comes & little ones are very resilient (more than us sometimes!).

Holding you in my thoughts x

Yes I wouldn't go for that being told I couldn't be there with the piggie.
Just a thought, I was quoted £150 but £100 of that was cremation and I found a cheaper crematorium, and obv people can bury piggies. Just mentioning in case that's the pricing x

I’ve not been in with my babies when they’ve been put to sleep using gas and then injection but always ask to see them when they’ve passed. It normally doesn’t take long for them to pass that way. I can understand why you’d be worried after witnessing your other piggy.
Think the prices do vary a lot, one vet in my town charges £165 for an out of hours vet and the other now doesn’t have emergency vets and you have to travel miles.
My past rat Hamish had a stroke (and was walking in circles, very poorly) on a bank holiday and the vets didn’t even charge me for the appointment, just the cost of him being put to sleep. They vary so much.

How do they usually do it? She told me that was normal. I'd even asked for him to have anaesthetic gas first so he was unaware (said I was happy to pay more) and she said it wasn't necessary! X
It is definitly neccassery, I Havnt had a guinea pig put to sleep yet. But with gerbils they gas them to knock them out, and then put an injection straight through the heart. Sorry to pop up out of nowhere, I alerted furryfriends teas to the thread

Thank you he's so sad and angry that she's dying. He keeps asking me to give her some medicine. So hard to explain sometimes it's to far for that x

Thanks but shockingly it was £50 extra for cremation. I'd already knocked that off as always Bury them x

It costs £80 for cremation now at my local vets. Last year (sorry no, 2018) when my Poppy the chinchilla was put to sleep it was £25. They changed cremation firms so seemed very steep after the last people. But I’ve got a shared garden so can’t bury them and like to have them back with me.

Which vet are you registered with? Did you get theOOH vet number when you called them? I’m near sevenoaks but the girls are registered in Bromley and the boys in paddock wood.

One vet near me offered to let us off for free after we had a gerbil put to sleep, the vet actually said she respected someone actually getting a gerbil pts. They don't normally see it or do it

I had to pay the vets for her to be put to sleep too (think around £35) but that was just for her ashes.
Yeah some vets really don’t see teeny beasts very often, my local vets saw a lot of rats but when I went in with Hamm (my rehomed dwarf hamster) they said barely ever see them. Trying to work out doses for his recurring ear infection caused them stress!
That’s nice of your vets though :)

I bet they had to look it up in a book or the Internet. I still payed for the pts job. But it's was about £30. I Bury all of my animals, I am running low on space though now. Thee must be about 15 now

Pennards. But I also called some others and most either use pennards or they gave vets about 40 minute drive away as their emergency vets?!

Some vets are genuinely caring. When I was a teenager I had lots of pets (still do to most people! 🤣) and was always down the local vet with something. She was the nicest vet ever and very often didn't charge me for appointment, just for medicines. Then unfortunately I've known other vets who are very money oriented and uncaring. When I was quite young I worked with a vet on a Saturday. Some of the things I saw going on were truly awful and was shocking... The poor owners paying for "care" would be shocked too. If I was more confident like I am now I would of reported it. Its the same as childcare places I've worked, seen shocking lack of care and worse. I now never blindly trust that someone who works with animals or kids actually likes them!

Is that who you took your previous piggy to?
I’ve never needed to go to an emergency vet as yet, but maybe try ringing Anderson veterinary practice emergency number. Putlands in paddock wood use vets now. I got it wrong the other one is Bromley common vets. I’ve attached the emergency number below.

How is she doing? I would really try and get her seen. It’s a painful amount to pay but she may also be in pain. Sorry you’re in such a tough spot. Thinking about it, would you be able to get the the vets now?

Thank you. I'm definitely going to leave her be now. She's in a very deep coma. She doesn't need a vet.

No the vet that did the bodge job of putting my last boy down was priory lodge. X

I know what you mean, I get the same vibe when I've been to my local pets at home in Northampton, the vet there doesn't seem interested in small animals atall, he doesn't handle them well, has to look through a book to see what to do. He tried telling me gerbils only live to 2 years old so mine must be old at 2. When they live to 3 or 4. I started arguing with him about it, was pure cringe. Luckily now, I'm using the best most caring vets I've ever spoken to

When Jess had an infection down below and I had to see a vet I wasn’t too keen on at my local vets she told me I needed to separate her from Rupert and keep her alone ‘as it would only get worse!’ They’d been together over two years and were for another four after that, she was fine after antibiotics, nothing to do with Rupert and their ‘loving times’! Never saw the vet again as always asked for someone else!

Hope she passes peacefully. If anything changes then definitely follow the advice from previous links that people have posted for you or find another vet you can get to, although I know you don’t really want to.

Yea I wouldn't have see her again, we us guinea pig owners ourselves, know better than alot of vets about day to day care, they know the treatment sides of things. Good vets know both

Yep don't worry I've just got in bed and put her wrapped in a blanket in a box next to my bed so I'll hear if she starts moving or anything but I can't see tgat happening, I think she'll just slip away. I would definitely take her to the vet if she was suffering whatever the cost. X

I am feeling for you! I sincerely hope that Bear can gently pass away and is not waking up again.
Make sure that you keep her warm but not hot to counter the discomfort as the blood circulation is no longer working fully.

HUGS

Yes she feels very cold even tho she's wrapped up and in my warm room. I have to watch very carefully now to catch a small breath so it won't be long x

Do you have a microwaveable snugglesafe pad you could heat for half the maximum time or a hot water bottle you could fill with warm but not hot water?

Would you consider taking her in if she’s still there in the morning? Bromley common do a Sunday surgery in Orpington if you can get there. Waiting to see how your night was.

Thank you all for your support last night. She died very peacefully in her sleep. I'd bought her in bed with me wrapped in a towel to try and keep her warm! Will Bury her in the garden today X
