After 8 days of meds (metacam and emeprid) plus syringe feeding Poppy suddenly became very unwell. She appeared bloated and in pain, she was lying down as if exhausted and her hair was sticking up. She was jumping and wincing in pain when her tummy was touched.

We took her to the emergency vet last night and they think she has a gut obstruction. She had intensive care, fluids, injected painkiller and was syringe fed. She also had a gut stimulant drug which is like the emeprid but stronger, I can't remember the name of it but I think it began with an R.

She is now pooping but still gassy and uncomfortable. The vet last night suggested surgery may be necessary to look at what the problem with her gut is as there is no other way of getting rid of the gas.
As Poppy is almost 5 years old (and since we lost her sister in August after spay surgery) we had agreed that we wouldn't put her through surgery, which means she would have to be put to sleep.
We are waiting to hear back from the vets this afternoon about how she is but I really need to know if there is anything else that we can try with her before we give up.

Any help much appreciated

Sorry to hear you are going through this.

The drug beginning with 'R' may have been Ranitidine which is Zantac, it works on another part of the tummy to Emeprid and the two are often used in conjunction together.

The vet really needs to ascertain whether it is gas or a blockage causing the issue? Have they performed an xray to check for any masses in the abdominal area? Bloat is a terrible thing to witness my heart goes out to you.
We had to have Megan PTS after a severe episode of bloat that wasn't improving, an abdominal mass in her tummy was thought to be causing the problem and her system had slowed down so much. It is heartbreaking to watch them lethargic and in pain, we opted against anything invasive surgery and had to let her go.

I am really sorry you are going through this, love to you and Poppy x

I am ever so sorry. Not great news at all! You could try and take her on a little car trip; the vibrations may help to shift the gas - sadly it's not exactly the right weather for that. Shifting gas can unfortunately be very difficult at times even if there is no obstruction. Has she had an x-ray to see whether it is just gas or something else?

I lost my Ffowlyn last May to overnight bloat; when we came down on a Sunday morning, she was sadly too far gone to do anything else but have her put out of her misery as quickly as we could. She'd been having bloating issues for nearly a year, bu most of that was gas in her stomach and not her belly, so it was much more difficult to diagnose at first. :(

Just found out Poppy died at the vets this afternoon.

Heartbroken.

I am so sorry; you were up against it. Bloat is one of the nastiest things that can happen to a piggy. You did what you could, so please don't feel guilty!
