Hi all,

I took in some piggies on Sunday and 1 has mafor problems, I am extremely concerned about her, completely out of my depth and I have no idea what to do :(

She is sitting in the corner of her cage, with her head facing the corner, her breathing is very laboured. She is underweight. She has issues with her eye, we can't tell if she actually has an eye, but the eye lids are fastened shut with just a small gap in the middle, which has pus coming out of it. She also has chelitis I think http://www.guinealynx.info/cheilitis.html, although I'm not sure if it is as it is around her eye too.

Anyone had any dealing with anything like this? I am so worried about her :(

I should just add she has been to the vet and is on antibiotics and painkillers.

Oh my word she sounds very poorly, bless her :(

I dont have the experience with this I just wanted to say I hope you manage to help her.

What did the vet say was wrong with her, just the Chellitis?

the vet has no idea, she has alot of problems, our main concern is her laboured breathing, and the pus coming from her eye. but we are completely out of our depth with what to do.

I'm sorry to post this...but maybe it might be better for her to not have to suffer any more? :(

maybe if she hadn't just arrived and wasn't eating like a horse. She needs to be given a chance.

We won't let her suffer if she isn't going to get better.

We have no idea if she actually has an eye, I doubt we would be able to get any drops into it as the split is so small.

We are just waiting for her vet notes to be sent over, as apparently she has already been treated, and is doing much better.

Only things I can think about is antibiotic spray over where her eye is/should be to help topically as well. and just keep bathing it. Better out thatn in really as far as wound care goes.

Breathing sounds like she is fighting hard so I would have thought lots of fluids and rest to keep her calm. Sound like her body is fighting massive infection and all you can probably do is support her with fluids, food and rest as you can. If infection is this advanced she might not pull through though.

Are you managing with the piggies you took in? I am able to help if need be... Especially if this little one is taking a lot of your care...

Have you thought about giving Frusemide as well as the ABs to help clear the lungs? When they are fighting a massive infection the fluid build up can become overwhelming.

Which ABs is she on? Zithromax may be a good alternative in her case - ask your vet to contact Simon Maddocks if they are not familiar with it.

Fingers crossed !

No experience of this, I just wanted to send good wishes and hope the little one gets better soon xx

Aww poor love. I have no experience with this either but want to send healing vibes to her.

Claire (All0About0The0Animals) has dealt with Chelitis recently - not sure what treatment she used (I'll give her a shout).

Fergus had a most awful eye infection when he arrived last year. Initially treated with Septrin while the pus was venting through the socket - once the eye receded back into the socket the pus was venting behind the eye causing neurological problems (signaled by head drifting). Treatment was switched to Zithromax, he recovered fully and the eye is still fully functioning.

As the pic is a bit gory I've given the link - don't look unless you don't mind icky stuff. This is not at it's worst but you get the idea!

This is the same eye now.

Oh no Vicky, I'm so sorry she's so poorly. Was going to advise a specialist near to us in Shifnal who deal with piggies but think Simon may be the better option.
Hope she gets the treatment she needs asap and pulls through - so heartbreaking when they are given another chance in life :(
Like MerryPip, give us a shout if you need any help with her or the others. We have a bit of room to foster here if needed to free you up a little.

That is an amazing transformation - what a lovely piggy Fergus is x)

Cant praise zithromax antibiotic enough,it has been a lifesaver for two of my piggies.

It's brilliant that there is another AB other than Baytril and Septrin suitable for our piggies - this kind of info is undoubtedly a god send to people :)

Hi Vicky - having met this lovely lady I really hope she can make a recovery. Having met her when I collected her and the other pigs to take to Vicky, it is impossible to tell if she has an eye. I feel so sorry forn her - x to you and the pigs Vicky

For the breathing I would put something like Vics Vabour Rub (or something else menthal) in boiling water and leave it near the cage. It will help clear up her chest if that is what is causing the breathing problems. Does the vet have an oxygn tent? Could help her breathing while her body tried to recover.

Claire used the Gorgeous Guineas F&M ointment for Dibby in the end, he had the worse case of Chelitis, I know this as he is now living here and I applied it tonight. It smells quite lovely!

Fingers crossed this little girly makes it Vic, if she's eating she must have some fight in her xx

whee are all sending some loving healing wheeeeeeeeeeeeeks for the little girlie xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Nothing extra to add really, just wanted to say we have everything crossed for this little lady. x)
