Hi

I had to rush Alfie to the emergency vets last night as he had a runny nose and was sneezing. The vet said its a URI but to wait and see if it passes. Alfie is currently sitting on my lap and sneezing and keeps wiping away the snot from his nose.

Does anyone think i should take him back as i would of thought antibiotics would be needed.
Alfie seems to be eating/drinking and doing number 1 and 2s and is his usual self, I'm just worried about him and dont want anthing bad to happen to him.

Badger his brother is showing no symptoms and the vet also checked him over.
The vet stuck a thermometer up Alfies bum and his temperature was fine.

Any advice is greatfully recieved

I would have thought if a URI antibiotics would have been prescribed to be honest. I would seek a second opinion especially as you are getting snot from his nose. How is his breathing sounding any hoots or crackles?

Some vets are better than others when it comes to piggies, here is our vet locator http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/ Or just ring round asking if any vets are knowledgeable on piggies

Please keep a close eye on him, if his breathing gets worse or he stops eating then get to a vet ASAP

His breathing is fine, no crackles or hoots.
I will keep a close eye on him and book him in for an appointment on Tuesday as its bank holiday tomorrow, but if he suddenly deteriates i will deffo rush him to a vet

Louise I would ring the emergency vets up & say that you think you should have been given antibiotics for him & as he has been seen already can they leave a prescription for you to pick up as another vet visit shouldn't be necessary unless he gets worse. Check that they will only charge for the meds if you have already paid for the consult :)

I agree with the others that he should have been given antibiotics. If he has a runny nose a product called Bisolvon would also help as it clears the mucous. As Poppy's Mum says could you call the emergency vet and arrange to pick up the medication. If his diagnosis of a URI is correct then it won't just go away on it's own. If you do have antibiotics then Alfie will also need probiotics given at least an hour after the antibiotics. You can get these from the vet, online or even from Pets at Home. Brands are Bio Lapis, Avipro Plus, Fibreplex and the Pets at Home one is called Pro C.

Thank you i will phone them right now, i did pay for the consultation last night. If they wont give a probiotic i will go to pets@home tomorrow and get the Pro C. I will let you know what they say.

I am sure you do & I think you should have received antibiotics from the vet & that you shouldn't have to pay for another consult when they should have given you antibiotics when you took him before :) I think once he's better I would be looking for another vet with exotics experience if I were in your position, you did the right thing getting him seen early :)

:) I used a vet in Victoria London as my local vets was closed and the message on the phone said i had to contact Queen Elizabeth Street vets, I have organised a prescripton to be collected tonight and have arranged for someone to go and get the medication from the vets right now. The vet would not give a probiotic so i will head to pets at home for the Pro C.

@helen105281 I am SW London - near Clapham Common so can easily get the underground or bus to Camden to see a vet. I will register first thing tomorrow morning with the vet you suggested. Thank you

Brilliant, one of the other members here is a nurse there and was involved in setting it all up @Abi_nurse
