My piggies have a URI and I'm struggling to get them to eat anything but lettuce leaves and hay. Is this a problem? They are eating hay by the bucket load, tonnes of it! But not a lot else

It may be because they are struggling to breathe and hay is easiest. I would weight them every day and if you find they are not maintaining their weight then you may need to step in with syringe feeding. What medication are they on?

They are on Baytril, 0.09 ml twice daily. Substantial quantity of both lettuce Leaves and hay have gone today and pellets are going but a bit slower than usual

Are they on probiotics too? I would be careful feeding so much lettuce though as it can give diarrhoea in large quantities even without Baytril. If you are not already giving probiotic please get some as Baytril can make them feel lousy and will destroy the good bacteria in their guts. You can get Pro C from Pets at Home or Fibreplex, Avipro Plus or Bio Lapis from Vet UK and it needs to be given at least an hour after the antibiotics.

Are they snuffly? If so Bisolvon would help but you would need to get this from your vets, it helps clear mucous.

Okay I will get some Pro C tomorrow. No sign of any bad pooing which is good! I weighed them on Monday when they went to the vets and they have both gained an ounce since then, one an ounce and a half so that's good right?

Great. I will get probiotic and try hand feeding some veg later :) thanks for your help
