I can't actually believe this is happening, but Toast seems to have another URI.
Last night I noticed a wheezing sound when she breaths. Sounds a bit like crackling/rumbling, still fine in herself though.

I've had her at the vets at least twice a week for the past few weeks with other issues, cystitis, bladder crystals, unstable weight, dental issues and she's meant to be going in on Monday to have her back teeth sorted under GA.. how is it possible for so many things to go wrong with a guinea pig? I genuinely don't understand it.

Last time she had a URI she was given Sulfatrim as she did not respond well to Baytril at all. Is Sulfatrim the best for this?

Oh well, off to phone the vets for the 4th time this week :(

I might be wrong but I think my vet told me that Baytril works best, but Sulfatrim can be used too. The last time one of my boys had a URI we used Sulfatrim. We had to use it for about 1 month, I think, but it did cure it for him

Thanks. She was given Baytril the first time round and after 2 days on it she stopped eating and moving and just lay there looking lifeless, changed to Sulfatrim and much better. Just feel so sorry for her it's one thing after another

So sorry to hear that poor Toast is ill again.
It seems like she just can't get a break at the moment.
Sending gentle hugs from Switzerland for both Toast and you.

Just back from the vets. As usual Toast gave me a good showing up.

All night and morning she was cracking and hooting then as soon as she got to the vets she acts completely fine and he could only hear slight noise.

She's been given Septrin 0.4 mls twice a day and Loxicom 0.4mls once a day.
She was meant to be going in on Monday to have dental work done which probably won't be happening now but I've to keep the appointment and take her in for a check up anyway.

My nerves are shattered!

Poor girl, it really is one thing after the other for her. Hope the URI clears up quickly so she can have her teeth done. If not it may be she needs a change in antibiotic to something like Doxycycline or Zithromax. It could even be allergies, did your vet consider that?

If you are lucky, the crackling was just a bit of a temporary obstruction in the airways. Guinea pigs can't breathe through their mouths, so every little bit of dust or pollen can sound rather hooty or crackly and much worse than it is. Often a good sneeze clears the airways at some point.

If you have an issue with loud breathing, place a bowl with steaming water next to the cage to help ease the breathing. you can add a couple of drops of olbas oil (no vicks, please, it contains ingredients that are harmful to guinea pigs) if you really wish, but it is not necessary.

All the best! Please give a pinch of probiotic 1-2 hours after the antibiotic. I would also recommend to up the vitamin C to help boost the immune system. Septrin or sulfatrim are OK if your guinea pig has a negative response to baytril. You are rather looking at cautionary treatment and not at a full-blown URI anyway.

Allergies weren't mentioned. She's never had an issue with hay before, the only change I've made is that I've recently introduced some oat hay... don't know if that could have caused it? I'm hoping it's all sorted for her dental on Monday though

Sorry iv missed this, been having a hectic and emotional day with my darling fudge.

Really hope it was just a minor obstruction and she is fit for her dental x

Got Toast's bag all ready for her dental tomorrow, all her favourite hays packed and her fleece blanket that smells like Beans so hopefully that'll give her some comfort.

There's a chance it might not be going ahead if the URI is still present, but I haven't heard any noisey breathing at all today so hopefully it'll go ahead as planned. I'm sick with worry for her, this is her 3rd dental under GA in 3 months, but she's a tough little pig and I think she'll be fine.

Currently having some cuddles with my beautiful Toasty

Stunning pic of one of my favourite forum piggies. I shall be thinking of her tomorrow.

Well Toasty wasn't able to get her dental op today, her lungs were still a bit crackly, although better than before so she's heading in the right direction.

I'm a bit gutted as I wanted it over and done with to get on top of the problem and for the sake of my nerves, but also a tiny bit relieved as I don't have to worry for another week.

Toast is definitely relieved. She's back with her sister, with her face in a bowl of oat hay :D
