Hi new to this forum and also new to owning guinea pigs. I have 2 females called Cookie and Oreo. They are about 5 months old. I have had constant respiratory problems with Oreo for about 3 months now she has been on several antibiotics but it doesn't clear. Her breathing is heavy and she has the occasional cough but whilst on antibiotics Sulfatrim she seems ok eating, drinking and running around. When antibiotics were stopped she went down hill very quickly and had diahorrea, lethargic and wasn't eating or drinking. This has been going on for a long time now and I am not sure if she has underlying problem. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would recommend finding a good guinea pig specialised vet firstly. Usually coming off medicines don't cause diarrhea so I think it could be something else causing the problem. I'm not sure what though so I can only recommend another vet visit.

The diarrohea starting when the antibiotics are stopped are probably the infection spiking again because the course has been stopped too soon.

The fact he responds to the Septrin means it is likely infection, so I'd take him back to the vet and request at least a 6 week course to try and shift it altogether. Another option is trying a stronger antibiotic such as Zithromax .

Please give probiotics 1-2 hours after each antibiotic dose to help keep the guts balanced.

Weigh daily To make sure he is eating enough food.

All the best X
