I have a guinea pig who has had a bladder stone operation.

Obviously I am very keen to do anything I can so they don't come back.

I read that Uriflow can help so I've got a tub of 60 capsules, but I have no idea how much I need to use per dose for a guinea pig.

I'd really appreciate if anyone has any information they could post here in simple terms so I can start using them.

Thanks very much.

Hi!

I tried to respond to your PM, but couldn't - I guess you need more posts till you can receive PMs.

I'm actually using it at the moment on Cassie, who has a history of bladder problems. It definitely helps her a bit.

To be honest, I really don't know the dose, which worries me a bit, but I use it like this:

Twice a day: a very small amount from the capsule, amounting to approx a pinch (or even less - I'd describe it as a small pinch!)

I then dilute it to 1 ml liquid and feed it via a 1 ml syringe. I was using just water, but Cassie hates the taste, so I now use a dilution of carrot juice and water, so she'll take it voluntarily.

When I first started, I used a very small amount of water, so it would go down easier (as in, I could shoot it into her quickly), but I found that increasing the liquid content made it work better - I guess it flushes it down better.

Hope this helps a little.

Ah that's good as I decided to try 1ml of mixed water and cranberry juice with some in earlier.

I don't like giving more than 1ml by syringe as he is is fed up by then - smaller amounts he accepts if not willingly then resignedly.

I never thought of carrot juice, do you buy it or make it yourself? I have a juicer but I've never used it.

I thought I'd leave it at once a day today as he is still taking painkiller/antibiotic once a day until tomorrow.

Thanks very much for your advice.

I am so worried about him, and I got the impression that the vets, although they were brilliant, wouldn't want to operate on him again.

I got the carrot juice at Waitrose. It was the only thing I could think of that would be nice tasting for her! :) It's not ideal though, as she doesn't normally eat carrots - not great for her bladder. I figure it's only a very small amount a day (roughly two thirds dilution carrot juice to water), and it helps it not be a battle to get the Uriflow into her!

Best of luck with your piggy - I'll be really interested to hear how you get on.

Oh I don't think there is any Waitrose round here but I think Morrisons do pure carrot juice. I will look when I go. Cranberry is probably better for the problem but is not his favourite taste by a long way.
