Teenage Guinea Pig
Hello everyone!
If you saw my post here yesterday, you'll know I took my guinea pig, Porche to the vets today for squeaking whilst toileting, wheezing slightly and for them to have another look at her eye.
The vet gave her a thorough check over - looked in her mouth, felt around her bum and stomach, listened to her chest, put dye in her eye and looked with a torch etc and all seemed to be fine apart from the obvious squeaking when touching her abdomen area.
Porche wee'd on the table so the vet sucked it up into a syringe and immediately went and took it for testing. Around 5 minutes later he returned to say there was traces of blood (although it wasnt visible without the test) and I think he said something about proteins too.
So, basically, a suspected UTI which is also presumably causing the wheeziness because her immune system is lowered and she's not feeling the best.
He prescribed us with a 10 day course of Baytril which is the 2.5 percentage one - to be given 2ml in 100ml of water and to be changed daily when she's drank it all. I did think this was strange as I'd never experienced baytril in water before but luckily the taste isnt bothering her and shes continuing to drink as normal.
What is worrying me is, should she have been prescribed some kind of pain relief what with her eye issues aswell? We are continuing her on Tiacil eyedrops from a scratch in her eye a couple of weeks ago. She doesnt nessacerily seem in pain but shes lazing around more than usual and the expected squeaking is still there when toileting.
We have to go back in 10 days for another sample, the vet did say it should clear up with the baytril but if not we have to go back to investigate further.
Please share your advice and experiences - I will be going out tomorrow to get her some dandelions wash and then soak in water to ensure she is getting plenty of fluids and will be getting some cranberry juice ASAP. Sorry for such a long post!
