Used Hutch question

I have just bought a guinea pig hutch which the previous owner has creosoted before selling it to me. Is this safe for Guinea Pigs or will creosote be harmful to them? Possibly even just the fumes? Can anyone help? Thanks.
 
I thought creosote was now BANNED in general as in not to be used at all! Creosote is pretty nasty stuff.... Are you sure it was creosote? I would definitely not put my piggies anywhere near it, if you can smell the creosote smell they can too and their respiratory system is very delicate!
 
Is it creosoted inside and out?

Are you sure it's not just woodstain? Most woodstain is pet safe but you'd need to be sure what was used

this is really dangerous the fumes are really bad for humans this is why it was banned so i would say it is for guineas/animals i know of someone who still has some and uses it for her chicken cope when she gets redmites has it kills them its that bad also guineas chew at the wood so i wouldnt use it ,,,are you sure its not wood stain ?as this isnt harmful if they have used the pet friendly one ..
 
It really stinks i remember painting about 25 stables outsides as a teenager and also causes burns if you get it on your skin! I think it also has carcinogens so i would avoid all creosote at all costs!

I'm not 100% it's creosote but it sure smells the same, pretty strong fumes.

I don't think it's been painted inside, but as we plan to keep the new pigs in the pantry of our house in these cold months, there wouldn't be much ventilation.

Luckily we haven't bought them yet, so a bit more research before I turn it into firewood!
 
my shed is creosoted

it is on the outside only, and was empty for a week before the piggies moved in, so it was extremely well aired.

No ill effects - but have been very careful. the inside is painted with a pet friendly paint, and they have no access to the creosote painted bits.

(not trying to reccommend it, and wouldn't have creosoted if I'd known it was banned - but under above circumstances should be ok. Just be extra careful with it)
 
Well can i just add that for 2 guinea pigs you really want and absolute minimum of 8 sq ft which would be a 4ft hutch that is two feet deep! there are many hutches out there that are far far TOO small. Piggies really like lots and lots of room to run around and do laps! Are you getting rescue pigs? We look forward to seeing pictures of the new additions!

This is what we use it for, its the best thing to kill the redmites the little blood sucking nasties. We get ours from france. Although we do ventilate the chicken house a lot before they go back in!
