Hey everyone,

Sadly my darling Seamus Dougal was diagnosed with Lymphoma last week by the vet. He was initially tested for Diabetes as he exhibited all the signs, but his urine test proved negative, so blood work was done, and came back as positive for Lymphoma. A friend of mine mentioned using CBD oil to potentially treat the cancer and/or at very least use it as pain relief. Does anyone have any experience of this, or know anyone that's tried it? I've decided not to put him through chemotherapy as the long term side effects would likely reduce his quality of life, not to mention the stress of vet visits and undergoing the regular anaesthesia for the chemo drip etc, I just feel it would be cruel to put him through that.

So I'm looking into alternative treatments / pain relief and wondered if anyone had any experience of knew of anyone who had treated cancer in their guinea pig using CBD oil, and/or used it as pain relief?

Regards
Sarah

Sorry, I have no experience with it nor have I seen it prescribed by a vet on this forum.

I am very sorry for the diagnosis. Unfortunately, lymphoma is not curable. :(

I've found this study Wiebke, which involves feeding hemp seeds / oil to guinea pigs for 60 days. But I don't fully understand the results. It sounded like it killed/reduced cancer cells, but also affected bone marrow in a negative way. Unless I'm misinterpreting the results. I wonder if you could cast an eye over it and see what you think, if you've got a moment?

I don't know if these will work but I'll try and link them below:

The study can be downloaded as a PDF, here is the link: PDF

Have you spoken to your vet about this Sarah? That would probably be the best way forward x

@Jaycey

Sorry, I am not formally medically trained. Please speak to your vet about this.

I know @Adelle has used CBD oil for pain successfully in the past, but like everyone else I encourage you to chat to your vet (and take along the abstract of the paper, the short paragraph summarising it at the start).

From a quick look, the paper doesn't look at the effects of hemp on cancer cells at all, it looks at how ingestion of hemp affects different parameters of the blood (such as leukocytes, which are white blood cells). Essentially, there is a small but not very or not all significant drop in the concentration of the different bits that make up blood.. Afraid I can't comment on it more than that, sorry.

We should all read both news and scientific articles with our skeptic hats on, as people can sometimes sound very convincing! Ben Goldacre is a brilliant doctor who writes articles and books about so-called "bad science", I thoroughly recommend having a look at some of his stuff, though it will make you shake your fist at journalists and news-reporters when they report things entirely wrong ;)
