Hi everyone

Looking for some information regarding UTI's? Over the last few weeks our 6 year old boy Oliver had lost a little wait and going bony up top which is likely due to his age and muscle waste. He still eats 24/7 and his usual self : )

Yesterday I noticed at times he would arch his back, lift his bum and sit like that for a while and then give a distress squeak : ) I thought it was when he was pooping and watched like a hawk.

Had him checked at vets today and after looking on this site for reference, all information was great and so took a urine sample with us. She said she didn't think it was bowel related as his poops (a load done on trip to vet) looked healthy and good colour and consistency. She checked for impaction and gave him a good run over.

She done a urine test and it showed blood in urine and high protein. To the eye the blood was not visible. He is already on Metacam due to arthritis in his front leg and she's put him on a course of Septrin. If he gets worse to go straight back and if all goes well she wants me to hand another urine sample in next week so she can see if it's helping.

My question is, does a UTI cause them pain when pooping too? I am finding he goes through stints he doesn't poop much and then he doesn't stop and no reduction in what he's eating which also concerns me. It's like he also has wind as he gets a bit whiffy too but not sure if that's when he's pooping.

urine can smell offensive when there is a UTI.He is likely to be squeaking in pain when passing urine and feaces, these are very close together, urine infection can be the most painful thing.i know from personal experience !

Yeah his urine is a bit whiffy too. Horrible seeing them in pain but hopefully he will be as right as rain soon enough ☺️ He's an old man and likes his leisurely ways now haha

Every time he would move after doing it there would be poops but also even a dribble of urine too so makes sense. Thanks Eileen

Pain when pooping and peeing is usually caused by a problem in the urinary tract and not in the digestive tract. Oliver can indeed have either UTI (bacterial urine infection) or a cystitis (inflammation of the bladder walls) - sometimes they can be caused by a stone or bladder sludge. The symptoms are the same.
Clear urine can indeed test high on blood while red urine can test free of it. The discolouration is often from bacteria and not blood; something that many people are not aware of. I've been through it all with piggies of mine... :yikes:

Septrin is the recommended antibiotic for urinary tract issues.

Thanks Wiekbe

When I had researched his symptoms before vet appointment it did throw me off with people saying they could see the blood.

I am praying the antibiotics clear this with the age he is and hope nothing invasive would be needed. I was bad enough last year when he had the procedure for teeth and it took him a long time to wake from after But it done the job

Fingers crossed he gets more comfortable the more the Septrin gets to work
