Hi

I've just got back from the vets and one of my lovely piggies has a urinary infection and is now on banana tasting antibiotics. I just wanted to know if there is anything else I can do to help him and to try and stop this happening in the future?

Thanks
Lisa

Hi! Urinary tract infections can be quite tenacious. Good that your vet has prescribed septrin; that is the best antibiotic for the job. How long is he on septrin for?

What you can do else is:
- offer him some mildly diuretic foods like dandelion, cucumber and lettuce and encourage him to drink as much as possible to help flush out the bacteria as quickly as you can
- if you wish you can syringe some unsweetened cranberry juice (like Ocean Wave from the supermarket), either as it is or mixed with water. Personally, I am doubtful whether it works, but at least it is additional vitamin C, which helps strengthening his immune system.
- weigh him daily to monitor his food intake.
- make sure that he is out of drafts and on a dry, warm surface
The antibiotic will hopefully kick in within 2-3 days and the acute symptoms should disappear.

here is more information on UTIs: http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html (PS: septrin has the same active ingredient as the US brand bactrim)

Hi

The Vet told me to give the septrin for a week and we're booked in for another check up next Thursday.

Thank you for the information, I feel pretty helpless at the moment and really want to make him feel better.
I have just read on another post regarding Uti that carrot could contribute to it, Darwin loves carrots and I may have been feeding him too much.
I will try the cranberry juice, because like you said it's also vitamin c and should build his immune system up.

Much appreciated.
Lisa

Sorry to hear he has a UTI, Septrin is a good choice of AB for the Urinary Tract and is often the drug all vets reach for with UTI's we have had lots of success with it in the past with various piggies.

Lots of healing vibes to Darwin x

septrin is a really good medication but i think the course needs to be alot longer than a week. usually at least a three week course. were you given metacam? this is good as an anti-inflammatory aswell as pain relief which would work well alongside the septrin. x

No, the vet just gave me septrin - she never mentioned any anti-inflammatory medication?
We go back to the vets next week for another check up so she may give me more septrin then.

Having had all of my 7 on septrin at one time or another I would personally ask your vet for a longer course just to be on the safe side - it should only cost about another £5 or so and as she has seen your piggy she should be able to do a repeat prescription over the phone for you.
