So I’m considering giving my piggies veg evey other day and I'm considering doing this. My friend dose this with her piggies to encourage them to eat more hay. They oversly have pellets to! Would I be ok to do this? I would like to try and get mine to eat more hay x I would obersly get high vitamin c veggies.
Thanks

According to the newest studies from Germany guinea pigs need much more veggies than the general recommendation. According to this study guinea pigs would need at least 150g per day and pig and up to 300g for big piggies.
100g per day and pig is the amount they need to get enough vitamins to live a healthy life.
So I wouldn’t try to give veggies every other day.
My piggies get everything unlimited and they eat enough hay and I never had any problems with that. They are not fat and I have no issues with teeth or the stomach.

I always give veg twice a day, they need their vitamin C regularly. If you want to encourage more hay eating you could cut down the pellets or even cut out pellets sometimes. On cage clean days my piggies just get piles of hay with veg hidden in it, in their play pen- they do lots of cute foraging behaviours searching for the cucumber and carrot pieces and the hay always gets eaten up too while they are looking!

Not even if they got a big pile of veggies?

If you are going to cut anything out, remove their pellets. Veg every day is essential, but pellets can be reduced/removed all together if necessary.

What makes you think they aren't eating enough hay?

I always give red pepper, green pepper, corriander as staple veg every day twice. Never had a pig with a c deficiency in about 6 years i have kept them

It’s better to have the same amount of food every day then sometimes nothing and then a lot. To feed a pile of veggies to unused guinea pigs would lead to diarrhea and stomach pains.
My pigs are used to eat around 709-800g veggies all four together every day. I will possibly increase the amount when the younger ones eat more as the grow.

That’s okay then I’ll keep eveything the same ☺️ It just got me thinking my friend dose veggies every other day. They love
There pellets x I’m finding it difficult to find decent hay at the moment it seems to be hard
To get hold of and my piggies are fussy with hay x

I give mine veggies every day spread throughout the day.
They still eat vast quantities of hay so I don’t think you need worry about that.
Do you have another reason to suspect they’re not eating hay?

Your post went on as I was typing.
What type of hay do you use?
There are a number of varieties so maybe try a different brand?
I vary the hay I give mine .
If you are in the UK have you tried ordering direct from Timothy Hay?
Following recommendations from other forum members I tried this. It’s relatively cheap for a 9k bag and it’s lovely hay - at least the piggies think so, I haven’t personally tried it but it looks good and smells nice.

I get mine from a farm for 3.50-5.00 for 25kg bale I have 15pigs x

My Finn and Lara get veggies 3 times a day. They get variety of veggies every day and fruits as treats.
I am a believer that good quality veggies and clean environment will help them stay healthy. This beats exotic vet trip any day.
If they get enough vitamins through veggies and fruits, they hopefully shouldn’t have health issues.
