Hello! First I would like to apologize por my bad English, I am from Spain, but I'll try my best to explain to you my situation.

My poor little lulu, a 5 year old female guinea pig got a respiratory infection 4 weeks ago, obviously when we saw the first symptoms we took her to our exotic vet which has been treating our guinea pigs for all this years with a lot of success. He prescribed her Zithromax and bisolvon so she could expel the mucus, as she had lots of mucus and saliva. Her teeth were OK.
However after more than 2 weeks on this antibiotic lulu didn't improve, she continued coughing and sneezing and had a stuffed nose, also when she tried to eat she would expel the munched food along with mucus through her nose. The vet told us we should proceed analizing her mucus through a bacterial culture and so we did. The bacteria she has is critobacter braakii and is resistant to Zithromax and a wide number of another antibiotics, actually it is resistant to all the safe antibiotics listed here. So the vet has recommended we give her daily shots of antibiotics which would normally be dangerous orally but are not dangerous if used through injections.
The bacteria she has is sensitive to the following antibiotics: ceftazidime, cefotaxime, cefovecina, imipenem, meropenem, amicacina and tetracycline, I'm sorry I couldn't manage to find the names in English I hope they are very similar.

Have any of you tried any of this antibiotics injected and know which one is the safest and most effective for piggies? I just wanna be sure it is safe before he gives her any shot.

Thank you very much for your responses. I know it is a tough question to answer. Finally she was feeling pretty miserable this morning so I took her to the vet, he insisted in that her only chance for recovery was a shot of tetracycline, so I agreed and she got the injection. This antibiotic is administered every 5 days as it has a long lasting effect. I will update this post with news about lulu in case this can help anyone in a similar situation.
 
So sorry your little one is poorly. Well done for your vet doing a swab to find out the bacteria, that's great practice.

I would be looking at using oxytetracycline injections as the bacteria is sensitive to this type of antibiotics (tetracycline). I have done this in one of my own many years ago for a similar issue. And although there is a risk in use these types of drugs this really helped and cleared the infection and I think if the infection is multi resistant then this will be your best shot at clearing it.

Ps. Just noticed you've stared these. I've never used a long acting one and had to do twice daily injections myself.

Thank you all for your kindness. It seems the oxytetraciclyne injection is kicking in as her symptoms have shown some remission. However, her poos have become very small and infrequent, I am very concerned about this and where I live I can't find any exotic vet available during the weekend, is there anything I could do to help her with this issue at home?

yes i am syringe feeding her, around 30ml per day, as she eats around 40-50gms of food my herself per day, should i increase the amount of critical care i am giving her?
 
Yes, I would increase it significantly to start with and aim for about 50 - 60 mls per day. A guinea pig who isn't eating for themselves needs around 120 mls per day to just hold weight stable, so that shows you just how much they need. They metabolise food very quickly.
 
Dont know if this helps atall, but i had a guinea pig that had pneumonia and if i remember correctly, the vet injected septrin everyday for around 5 days , and this completely killed the pneumonia and my pig lived on from around 4 years old at the time, until late 6 years old.

I think it was septrin, what i do know, is whatever the antibiotic was, it was a type of penicilin, very dangerous oraly but ok injected. I did question the vet about it, and she wasnt worried. ( this was before i knew about my current vet)

Septrin isn't a penicillin, though. It's co-trixomazole, which is on the safe list I think. @Lucatiel, I have nothing to add to what's been already said except to say welcome and that I hope little Lulu gets better soon

It must have been a different antibiotic. And the only way to find that put is to go through all my past vet receipts
