I went to see my Guinea pigs at the store-- they won't let me take them home until they have quarantined them for three days to make sure they are healthy. I went to hold them and check up on them. Well, the black Abby had very teary eyes. Clear, healthy, not flakey. Just wet. She was not sneezing and looked healthy otherwise. Please advise. The petstore guy said this is normal-- anything I should look for or notice before bringing her home? The other Abby had dry clear eyes. But I've fallen in love with the pair-- who are being quarantined separately by the way. As a first time future owner I am scared. I love them but do not want to bring home a sick piggy to our kids.

Are the eyes running or just brimming?

Runny eyes generally indicate a mechanical irritation/injury of some sort - pollen, dust, something stuck in the eye or, if one eye is suddenly very runny, an eye poke.

The area around BOTH eyes was very wet. However, the eyes were clear, no sneezing and she seemed healthy.

It rather sounds like she got hit with some dust and leaked it out.

First of all, it'd like to say a this is an AWESOME forum. I can't wait to get the piggies and am so glad that I have a place for chat and support.
So I am going to bring them home separately, take the tears one to the vet and see what happens. Will keep you posted. My kids are thinking of naming them Cleopatra and Zilly.

Please bring them home together if you can; at that young age they are desperate for company and will feel very lost on their own. But a health check at a vets for any new guinea pig that hasn't had one at a good rescue is always a good idea.

Could you please add your country, state or (for the UK) your county/general area to help us to always give you the appropriate advice straight away. With members from all over the world, things can differ a lot! Just click on your name on the top bar, then go to personal details/location. Thanks!

update--so I bought them home together and they were diagnosed with conjunctivitis. The vet gave eye drops. But when I put them in a cage together, they are just sitting there. Just sitting in a corner together. Still like eggs in a nest. I am worried. Might post another thread.

They may just be nervous but yes start a thread if you are worried. Where abouts are you?
