I took my pigs to the vets for a check up because I've noticed them scratching. First the vet asked me if they were guinea pigs (should have been a warning) then dropped one of them from hip height. Her lip was bleeding and all he did was dab at it with a tissue.
She was eating last night and seems happy enough but has a scab on her lip now.
I'm so traumatised by it - I want to take them to a different vet for a real check, but don't know if I can after that.

That is awful and my have been so traumatic :( I understand why you are so shaken, I would be too.

Is piggy eating okay now? Are they moving around okay, walking fine? I would still advise a check up for the scratching. Any sign of scabs in fur, bald patches or dandruff?

Hopefully piggy has been lucky and no harm done.

In the midlands we do have some good knowledgable piggy vet, we have a vet locator here Guinea Pig Vet Locator

Welcome to the forum and I hope your piggy is okay. What is their name?

She's been eating fine. Has a scab on her lip where she had been bleeding. I've seen her chasing her sister around, and she's currently drinking from the water bottle.
There's no signs of scabs or anything, but I've watched them scratch, then bring their foot up to their mouth as though they caught something and are eating it.
I'm thinking of trying White Cross vets but perhaps Manor Vets is a better bet as it's listed on here.
They are called Rosie and Ruby.

It's disgusting that a vet dropped your guinea pig.My vets are super careful with animals.I would find a new vet too.Glad she is OK.

thats awful for your guinea pig and awful for you to watch... i had a bad experience on my first ever trip to the vets with my guinea pigs, the vet squeezed one of them way too tight for my liking and i was nearly in tears when i said to her ' don't hold her that tight '.... safe to say i moved vets ( they ripped me off price wise too ! )..... x

Hi! Please make a formal complaint to the clinic - that is inexcusable! - and have your piggy seen by a proper vet to make make sure that front teeth and body are not damaged and to get a proper diagnosis. Send the bill to the first clinic.
We have got a recommended vets locator on the top bar.

I've booked them in with a different vets (one from the list here that a friend also recommended) for Tuesday. If she goes off her food or seems off before then I'll take her as an emergency.
I'm going to take them both together so the other one can be checked properly too (plus they cowered together last time so I think it's good for moral support).
A day later and I'm still upset about it. I've only had them about a month and already feel very strongly attached to them.

If it had been my hamster I'd not have been so worried as she is always hurling herself off things and seems to bounce!

Completely understand and you have a right to be upset. All the vets on the list are highly rated and recommended. Have a hug

Be lovely to see some photos of them both in the future, please keep us updated on her.

You really need to complain. Mention that he didn't seem to be aware of what a guinea pig looked like too. You could save some other poor guinea pig the same or worse.

Beautiful little herberts they are too

That's terrible- poor thing! I would be livid if a vet dropped my pig (and a little alarmed if he didn't recognize a guinea pig when he saw one! That seems like a no-brainer to me!) It's great that she is eating. I would try to get a peek at the front teeth to make sure they are intact. If she's eating, I think it's likely she is fine, just shaken!

I had to laugh at your hamster comment, my daughter got a hamster recently and she is so hilariously clumsy! She falls off things regularly (she has several platforms to climb on in her cage) and never seems any the worse for it!
