My older boar Geoff ( he’s about 5 yrs 4 months) is a bit slower these days - he suffers with impaction which is under control - he had a health check in May because of this - he is fine but the Vet said if could be worth giving him Johnson’s 4 joints every day to help his mobility as he’s older - she didn’t diagnose arthritis and said his hips are fine but advised it’s a preventative measure
I want to do everything I can you keep him mobile and so I have purchased this - has anyone used it ? What dosage should I give ?
I’d appreciate any advice

Hi

We recommend the strong dog liquid on here for any arthritic piggies in combination with a painkiller; it does make a real difference in terms of comfort and mobility. The dog liquid is easiest to give and it is stronger and more effective than the Oxbow joint supplement.

We recommend 0.4 ml once daily for a 1 kilo piggy; you adjust the dosage up or down accordingly for your own piggy.

(This is a UK-only brand.)

Thank you I really appreciate your advice Wiebke

My boys love it too!
I've got 3 oldies on it.
Are there any other things you do or give differently for older guineas?

Red and Brillo are both on Metacam long term for arthritis. Red also has Gabapentin. Duck was having 4joints as a precaution as he is 6 years old but he is now very ill with a mystery condition and on Metacam as well.

I give Red a belly and back leg wash occasionally (stand in a small bowl) as he gets crusty with urine. He doesn't wash himself so well now. He gets his eyes wiped with saline on a soft cotton pad once or twice a day as they get a little bit crusty and I feel it would be uncomfortable for him if a bit of crust went in his eye. I've also reduced the height of his bottle as he looked uncomfortable stretching up slightly, he seems to manage better tipping his head down a bit.

Both Red and Brillo are vet checked every six months to make sure they are not in pain and are still enjoying life at 7.5 and 6.5 ish years.

Thea is 8 and a half now and has just had a check at the vets because she had a uri which has now cleared after 15 days of Batyril. The vet didn't believe she was in pain as she is maintaining her weight. She has 0.15ml of Rodicare Akut every day to keep her tummy right as without it she has smoochy poops. When she was on Baytril she had the maximum dose of 0.3ml twice a day. I've just ordered 4 joints to see if it makes a difference as she is a bit stiff walking in the mornings.

Thea is doing amazingly in her retirement at Betsy Towers - 8 and a half and only just getting a bit stiff 👏👏
Some people have said that 4joints made a seriously noticeable difference to their arthritic piggies, I hope it does for Thea too.

There are different types. It comes in turmeric granules, tablets and liquid.
For guinea pigs you need the extra strength liquid. It is sweet and they seem to like the taste (mine do anyway!) and come to the bars for it, they take it like I am giving them a treat.
Brilliant thank you. Did you buy yours online? X
