I went to the vet because one of my guinea pigs has an eye infection and he sent me home with some vetropolycin after applying the first dose to his eye at the vet's office. When I got home I read that its for dogs and cats on the directions and I'm panicking a little. Is this going to hurt him?

Lots of medications that are used on guinea pigs are packaged for dogs and cats.
This is because there isn't a huge market for guinea pig medications, so whilst the actual medicine is safe and fine to use, it isn't worth the manufactures time and money making special packaging just for guinea pigs.

And Welcome to the Forum too.

Thanks! That makes me feel better.

Hello and welcome. Where are you situated? Please can you add your location to your profile as it helps us make sure we give relevant advice.

In the U.K. there are virtually no medications approved for use on guinea pigs, so most treatments mention other animals on the packaging. I'm sorry I don't recognise the name of the drug you've been given. I'm guessing you are outside the UK.

All right, thanks for the response! I'll stop using it on him. His eye seems to have cleared up now thankfully.

My vet prescribed the same medicine for my guinea pig, Muffin. They used atropine in her eye too, which I know is a steroid. I am very unhappy with the vet care I received. They didn't seem to care and didn't even hesitate about using the steroids. Also, the label that they gave me for the Vetropolycin was wrong too!

What did your vet prescribe the Vetropolycin for? My guinea pig had a corneal ulcer.

Sorry this is late. He prescribed it for my guinea pig's eye.

Yep! It actually seemed to clear up within two doses. I'm not sure what exactly was wrong with his eye to begin with, the vet didn't explain it too well. But the medicine did help. When I got him he had that eye shut all the time, but now it's fine.
