can you train Guinea Pigs to use a litter tray? all my rabbits are litter trained and now have a nice carpet lined shed i would love to use carpet in my guinea Pigs hutches as well but of course il have to train them to use a litter tray first and i dont know where to start :embarassed: any help and advice would be appreciated ;D

dont start..you will get absoloutly nowhere lol

i think most people on here have tried..the things with guinea pigs they will poo anywhere they please, if you put a box in for them to poop in they will tip it up, and knock it over! lol

Mine's use their toilets sometimes but that's only because they think the toilet is somewhere to sleep. Just depends on the piggie I think.

well i dont mind if they poop on the carpet its the wee lol poop is easily swept up ;D but i wont try if I'm going to get nowhere lol it was a nice thought though ::)

yeah i have noticed that my piggy Spike wees where he wants but joey seems to love weeing in his bed 98) any ideas on good bedding? i currently use Woodshavings and i know this is bad for them but I'm unsure what the best things is for them :-\ i would just use Hay and Straw but they'd eat it all in 5 minutes ;D :P

Yep,you are o.k.posting on this board because it is a general guinea pig question.

Yes,it is possible to potty train a gp.,but it is not easy, and is really only viable if you just have one ,or maybe two, free rangers. It will take a lot of patience and quite honestly, most folk just give up.Piggies are messy anyway as they trail hay all over the floor, and this sticks to your feet and gets all over the house. At least it does in my house!.I must admit I have never tried house training because I have too many piggies.

Do have a go though, you might succeed. Some pigs will poop in one corner of the pen/sleeping box,so you could try putting some kind of litter tray there.

Let us know how you get on. Mary

i may try training Joey as he does just wee in one corner. not to fussed where he poops though because their easily cleaned up and wont wreck the carpet lol but Spike would be difficult as hes slightly unhinged 98) lol

my girlies use it for wees but not poos. Bertie however, is a different matter ::) he just goes anywhere and often lies in it! (sigh) i love him though. :D anyway, what i did was when they were very young i started them . when i had them out, if they weed i'd put them straight into the litter tray and give them a treat.(small amount). this took ages and worked in the end, but they still occasionaly go elswhere, so it's kinda successful, kinda not! :) give it a go i should.

I havent met anyone yet who has managed to train their piggies there have been a few lucky people whos piggies have just done it wish mine were like that!

Ours leave poo-beans everywhere, but I have noticed that they don't wee on their towel that they sit on during playtime.. I think you'd maybe notice that they wee in fewer places, but as for the poops, I don't think they bother where they leave them!
