Hello, first time poster here! Proud owner of Violet & Poppy pigs, my 6 month old sows.
Is it normal for pigs to waste a lot of their hay? I have a hay rack so they don't poo or wee on it, I have changed over from a pet shop brand to a nice green meadow hay from Haybox in a bid to get them to eat more of it but they still waste so much of it! Are they just being fussy? They get veggies once a day and they have fresh pellets every day. I worry that they aren't eating the amount of hay they need to stay healthy/keep their teeth down. Any wisdom greatly received!

Piggies love eating hay with wee and poop added. Mine do it all the time. I have come to the conclusion that it must taste nicer that way if you are a piggy.

My pigs are queen hay wasters. I’ve given up trying to get them not to. I just throw the hay in the cage now with no bins or hay racks lol, but then again I have the opportunity to buy it by the bale.

Mine have their hay strewn all over the floor.
It gets slept on, played in, hidden under not to mention the wee and the poo.
Yes - there is waste but so long as the piggies are eating hay it’s fine.

Welcome to the forum and it would be lovely to see pictures of Violet and Poppy

I'm glad it's not just mine then! Here is Poppy and Violet (Poppy is the black one, very lively, enjoys an experimental nip to keep me in line! Violet is grey and sweet and placid, two completely different personalities!)

Wasting the hay is a favourite pastime for most pigs if experience on the forum is anything to go by lol. I opened a 1kg pack once and 30 seconds later Comet had it all over the cage. 1kg of hay. ONE KILO, COMET, YOU JERK.
Honestly as long as they're still eating it and they still have fresh hay available, I wouldn't auto chuck the old stuff. Somehow it still seems to disappear.
