Hi all, I'm new to the forum but have had guinea pigs for 10+ years. I'm hoping to get some opinions on what might be wrong with my new boar. He arrived to me yesterday from a rescue, I've been told he has dry skin but something is telling me it's something else. His skin doesn't appear dry and the flakes that come off are yellow and waxy/greasy feeling. His ears are quite frankly disgusting, I've never seen anything like it before. I've given them a good clean but there is still a fair bit to come out. He will be going to the vets this week as I'm worried his ears are so blocked he can't hear.
Can anyone give any advice on what might be up and how to help him?

Hi!

Firstly just want to say what a handsome boy he is!

Is he a teddy? They can get dry skin issues. You are right in taking him to a vet incase he has some sort of mite or fungal issue that could also be affecting his ears, a vet will be best to diagnose that.

I would contact the rescue in question and express your concerns about his ears.

I will tag @helen105281 for you as she knows more about skin issues than myself.

All the best x

He is a Teddy yes. I wasn't aware of his ear problem until he arrived. I've been told to use coconut oil on him every couple weeks and that they tried treating him for a fungal infection to see if it helped at all but there was apparently no change. I'm assuming his ears were like that while he was there as that's how he came to me.

I don't know much about ears so definitely see what the vet thinks about that. Teddies can get dry skin, my Barley does and I give him Imaverol dips every few months which is a fungal treatment but really gentle and it does help. Would be interested to know what the rescue treated with.
