Some of you might remember that 2 of our girls (Millie and Daisy) died a couple of months ago within 3 weeks of each other-they were almost 4 and were the youngest of our herd.

We have 2 girls (sisters) left who are almost 6. Lottie has ovarian cysts and after she had blood in her urine we took her for a check. The vet looked concerned and said along with her cysts she could feel a hard mass, I felt it also. The vet offered an X-ray but given her age we decided against it. We decided to treat her with septrin and metacam. The urine infection went and she's been great, our usual cheeky Lottie-until this morning. I found her under the hay looking close to death. I was so upset to see she has a bite on her lip which must have happened early hours. Why would Bonnie bite her? They have always been very close so I'm guessing she got frustrated with her? I feel heartbroken.

Now Lottie is under the hay, I've given her some metacam which she struggled to swallow. What do I do? We had to rush Millie to emergency vets to be PTS on a Sunday and it was costly. Do i just make her as comfortable as possible?

If she seems to be in any pain then I think it's our duty to not let them suffer and to take them to the vet to be euthanised.

Otherwise keep her warm and comfortable. If she's usually happy to be held give her a hug and say you goodbyes. Bonnie may want to be with her when she passes.

Heartbreaking as it is I think that I would take her to the emergency vet. If she is struggling to swallow then she really does need to see a vet ASAP to help her either way. Hugs x

Lottie is clearly slipping away and there's no evident discomfort so I don't see the need to upset her by driving her all the way to the vets.

She's seems soothed by me gently rubbing her head. My main concern is Bonnie, Lottie is nudging to get close to her and she's pecking her away-its now clear why she ended up with a bitten lip. I feel like I've got to watch the cage because I'm scared that Bonnie will bite her again. Would Lottie be happier on my lap in a towel? She never really liked being held, just stroked and spoken to.

Keep her warm and calm. As said above a vet is probably best but if youve decided against it then I would remove the other piggy who is probably distressed.

She's gone
I heard some shuffling so I looked and she had a little moment of fidgeting, her head stretched upwards then dropped down and she had gone.
Bonnie sniffed her then ate her pellets. She's in her house now looking sad. I just can't believe that she has lost all 3 of cage mates within 3 months. I hope she's copes okay. Lottie was a strong character and the leader, she was like a dog, always stretching up the side of the cage for attention. She will be very missed.

I'm so sorry for your loss. ((HUGS)) to you. It sounds like she went peacefully at home, which is probably nice and comforting for her. I've lost some the same way and know it's not easy for the owner watching, though. Thinking of you!

I'm so sorry for your loss, it's so hard to watch our little ones leaving us. I've been able to be with three out of my four. It makes me feel a bit better to know I was there when they needed me most, but it is still so heartbreaking. Hugs to you and Bonnie.

Thank you everyone.
It's really hard going from a herd of 4 to one single piggy in the space of 3 months. So strange that they have gone in the order that they came in.

I have put a piece of fleece with Lottie's scent on in the cage for Bonnie and she has been sniffing at it and lying on it, they had a special bond because they were sisters. Bonnie lost weight when Millie and Daisy passed away so I'm going to keep a close watch on her.

I am so sorry - I lost two within two days last year - it's such a huge shock to the system - big hugs xx

Just caught up with this thread today. I am really sorry x x x
