Hey guys! I weighed my male guinea pig today and I decided what to name him as well! His name is going to be Buffalo even though he looks nothing like a buffalo, he's white and only has a little bit of brown and black/brown mixed fur. Anyways, I weighed him for the first time and I saw that he was about 309 grams. I was told that he was about a month old but I think he might be 6 or 7 weeks old, he's about 6 - 6 1/2 inches long. Is that a healthy weight so far?
Also, does anybody have a weight chart? Or could someone just let me know how much a male guinea pig from 6-8 weeks should weigh and how much he should weight in about a year?
Thanks.

There are no weight charts because there is such a wide variation in healthy weight of an adult piggy. They come in all shapes and sizes and every piggy is individual. The adult weight range goes from 700g right up as high as 1500g and sometimes beyond - my three year old boys weigh 1300g and 1520g!
Generally speaking, a three week old piggy, on average, weighs around 250g (250g or three weeks of age that is the point at which baby boars need to be separated from their mother) but some will be a little more, some will be a little less.

All you can do is weigh him (and his friend) every week to ensure weight goes up. He will get to his natural weight in his own time. Any sudden drops of downward trends are of concern - weight loss can point to a health issue.

It’s their heft which is the best gauge of what is healthy for the individual piggy not their weight.

My 8 week old rescue boy weighed 270g but was underweight & malnourished when I rescued him. He’s now 4 years old & weighs 1046g. My 8 week old girl (not a rescue) weighed 478g and now (15 months) weighs 1217g (she loves her food!)

Thank you, I won't be getting his friend until tomorrow but I was told he weighs about 1200g, he's about 4 1/2 years old.

I am getting into the habit of having a note book and once every 2 weeks weighing them writing down the dates and how much they weighed each time this really helps if there is any time their weight increases or decreses by a good but it might be a sign of illness so i find the notebook thing a good idea

Generally one weigh in a week (at the same time) is sufficient and record their weight. Weight loss can be a good indication of illness, if you keep a record of weights and dates then you can track trends 😁

It's been almost a month and I weighed him yesterday and he was 360 grams. He gains about 15 grams each week.
