I have a 4 year old male guinea pig. Patches loves to eat cucumbers(no seeds) especially the peel. He also loves his timothy hay. Last week I noticed he was making a weird facial expression as he was trying in eat the peel of his cucumber and his hay. He was trying to eat it, but couldn't. He also will not use his water bottle. I did take him to the vet where they trimmed his teeth. He still wants to eat, yet can't. My daughter and I have been syringe feeding him for several days. We took him back to the vet. They took x-rays, checked him over, and said physically there is nothing wrong. She does not know why he is not eating. When we watch him try to eat, he doesn't "bite" through. He seems to still want to eat and does try, but can't seem to. I just don't know what else to do for him.... Any suggestions would be helpful..Thank you.

tag @furryfriends (TEAS) as she knows about dental issues

Were his back teeth looked at, as it sounds like there could be an issue there. It also sounds like the tooth trim didn't actually solve the problem so you need to take him to a guine pig vet who is experienced in tooth problems.

You also need to start hand feeding him if he can't/won't eat on his own. Guinea pigs need to have food moving through their digestive system at all times, otherwise it will shut down and they will die. There's a handfeeding page on this site so please look it up.

You can use special food such as Critical Care or mashed up pellets. You will need to syringe feed these to him using a 1ml syringe with the end cut off. He needs to have at least 60ml a day, or whatever is needed to help him maintain weight.

You need to weigh him daily at the same time to monitor any weight loss.

Please seek out a guine pig vet with dental experience
